this is becoming an insanely good deal. it was a good deal at 399, better at 349. and now 299? it's one of those slickdeals i'm tempted to buy even though i dont need it!
I am sure if you wait even more till 2021 or better 2022 BF, there will be even better electronics. 😛
Review for the laptop [notebookcheck.net]

Seems to be 2 M.2 slots and 1 DDR4.

I installed the 16GB Timetec Hynix RAM that someone recommended and it's working fine. Ran a userbenchmark (all apps closed, basic mode) and everything is looking good, with the processor running in the 100th percentile. I don't know how good of a benchmark tool this is but it's good to know that the computer is running well for the specs.

https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/23349806

However, the RAM benchmark is in the 45th percentile (43.7) with a 176 nanosecond latency. Again, I have no idea if this is that bad, but can anyone try the benchmark tool with their 16gb chips? Or perhaps recommend a better tool?
you are not gonna get a good ram benchmark with this motile no matter benchmark you use because it's running in single channel.

However, there's no effect on most everyday use for just about most cases.

The only time you will see impact is on using memory bandwidth intensive programs like benchmarks. Another program I could think of is y-cruncher which can calculate pi to billion or trillions of digits. that program is very memory bandwidth intensive. When i was using it to calculate pi to 5 billion digit using a 2011 v3 single cpu test system, going from single to dual to quad memory channel, the time difference was HUGE using the same cpu.

Worth selling the factory 8GB RAM online?

I just installed the 16GB and all is working good. Also put in another 256GB SSD and the intel wifi chip (which I don't think made any difference with my slow ass router, but oh well).

I just picked mine up this morning. I plan on using an older version of SolidWorks for modeling and drafting. I know that program requires a hefty amount of RAM so I anticipated upgrading to 32GB. I don't know anything about RAM channels so I've been worried it will not be effective. Sounds like from your y-cruncher experience it won't be nearly as effective as I hoped.

you can get around $20 for your 8gb ram on ebay:

depends on what you mean by effective. if it requires a lot of ram, upgrading to 32gb will allow it to run without using virtual memory or running out of memory when working with a project. so in that way, having 32gb ram is still good. and you can buy 32gb sodimm nowaday for around $115-130. I tested a 32gb sodimm in the motile and it works fine.

as far as single vs dual channel, it just depends on the type of program how it uses memory. cinebench doesn't have as much difference between single dual and quad channel memory.:

https://www.cgdirector.com/single...eadripper/

if solidworks behaves like cinebench, then being single channel memory won't really impact things as much.

you really can't change anything about the motile memory channel as it only have one sodimm slot and is therefore limited to single channel for both the cpu and iGPU...

So I know that several people have already confirmed that the Amazon USB C adapters work, but I finally received the one I ordered from Aliexpress and I can confirm that it also works for less than 1/3 the price (and I'm fairly certain it's the exact same adapter). Here's the link [aliexpress.com] again if anyone wants one.

Anyone else have a hard time opening the laptop, I tried dozens of screwdrivers and not one will open it. The ones that seemed to fit just act like they will strip the screws if i use too much force. I Never had this problem with new computer hardware.
I noticed when I opened my case that the screws had high strength threadlocker (red/ brown color) instead of the blue medium strength threadlocker that is typically used by everyone else. That means that it took a lot more force/torque to remove the screws than typical. You just have to be careful when you remove them not to break the screws off.

Does this allow me to charge via a USB-C cable? Going to buy this adaptor if so.

In for a reply. I don't think the Motile can ever be "charged" from it's usb-c port. I think the adapters people are buying are for using existing USB-C chargers (usually smaller than a normal laptop charger). But I could be dead wrong, and actually I hope I am! LOL

Yes, these plug into the DC port on the laptop where the AC adapter normally goes and have a USB C port on the other side. If you have a USB PD charger capable of outputting 20V (basically a 45W or higher adapter), then you can charge the laptop with it.

Technically 20V is slightly over what the laptop is expecting (19V) but it's close enough to not cause an issue in practice.

any recommended or usb C charger that anyone tried that they can recommend and maybe put in the wiki?

how about this cheap one: https://www.amazon.com/Universal-...cs&sr=1-7?

A charger with a detachable usb C cable would be preferred so that you can also use the usb C cable for data transfer.

I saw an earlier post for the ZMI charger ( https://www.amazon.com/ZMI-zPower...07D64QLQ1/ ) that I was considering getting myself because it's so small.

Looks very good. But before buying that, i would like to know if there is another charger that also have the usual usb so i can also use it to charge my BT headset and other things so i don't have to carry another charger

Yes. Using this adapter, you can charge via USB C Power Delivery. You'll of course also need power supply that can deliver 60+ watts via USB C PD. Shipping from China took about 3 weeks. There is also one with a short cable and a straight plug available. Here's one source [aliexpress.com] (make sure to get the 5.5x2.5mm version). I haven't tested this one, but someone else posted that the one they got off of Amazon worked fine.
