Since the Motile doesn't wake from sleep using the lid, you shouldn't need to disconnect the sensor to stop it from waking. Otherwise the magnets are permanent magnets on the lid of the laptop.
Another of motile "thoughtful" design now that we think more about it? Smilie.. Lol. Because they knew so many people would have multiple laptops in their bag next to each other?

So it looks like the THX software is delivering the bios updates. I was able to track down the bios update popup to C:\Windows\Temp where I also found the installation file that seems to be for the THX software. Additionally there was also a zip for bios version 1.06. I've never seen a computer push a bios update this way. Very bizarre.

I had already flashed the 1.05 bios on the motile site and the popup to install it kept failing. I manually installed it and fortunately did not brick my laptop (if it fails, look at the install script where you'll see the command it issues to flash the bios. you can try running that from command prompt, if it still fails like mine did, you'll have to remove the /R from the command and force it through. this is risky and not for the faint of heart. mine survived, no guarantees yours will).

this is a good little machine and i totally love it, but i HATE the way the bios updates work. it is by far my biggest complaint and if others who are less willing to tolerate it have the same issues, it'll drive them crazy. espectially if the install fails and they get a popup every time they log into windows.

thanks for letting us know. I hate whenever something as big as a bios update is pushed onto us like that. If it's just THX, not sure if i want it.

It looks like THX is responsible for distributing the update. I wouldn't go so far as to say they're the ones making it. That's probably done by the OEM.

Also, definitely back up the windows key that's preinstalled in bios before updating. Mine was wiped in the process of manually updating.

There is a THXupdate service in the THX folder in program files\THX

this seems to pull updates from the "cloud" as a service. Not sure why, but it seems on yours it pulled down a bios update, whereas on mine, it does not. I am on bios 1.05 which I manually installed weeks ago using the f.bat file in the bios download. It applied successfully to my device without issues.

I would be curious to know what site and folder it is pulling these files from, as the motilesupport site is not up to date at all.

So as you guys know I gave you the warranty info and have been doing lots of digging and research into these laptops. My research isn't finished, but I want to show you some of what I've found and there will be a follow-up post with more.

So, some of you already knew this was a Tongfang based chassis. I'd like to show you all the similar laptops using this chassis, because it'll give us lots of info on things like reviews from users from months ago, drivers, spec details we may not have known, longevity/quality, and more.

So let's begin!

If you're on Chrome, please use the right click "Translate to English" feature. Lots of great info here!

User Reviews available on similar configuration models (I used Chrome translate feature to read all of them, probably around 20 or so) spread on diff versions.

More info to come! I think this will help us all learn lots about upgradability, parts, future of Motile line, and more. It's possible parts that we can find for the above may be usable for Motile owners.

Very interesting stuffs. Most important long term thing is replacement battery. I think they do have them around if you google the battery model.

Great job! It looks like we have a good crowd of MoFo's here - that stands for Motile Followers, of course. What a great laptop! I can't be more happy with having both M142 and M141 for a total of $500 - R5 for serious work and R3 just for web browsing/youtubing. Hopefully any issues people have been having with black screens and freezing will be resolved by updates.

Yeap, this is definitely the best subcompact laptop deal around. The only laptop that are cheaper and weigh less are the netbooks with much weaker atom cpus that are non upgradeable. I tested 3 different m142 and didn't get any black screen or freeze. But i did a fresh win10 install and using latest chipset and gfx drivers from amd site. I think if you still have freeze and blackout after everything is update, maybe the laptop is defective and worth returning and buying another one. Since there's none available onsite, unfortunately you can't do easy exchange. but walmart return is easy enough

The costco HP i5 got a lot more attention. I am testing one right now but i still think the motile is better.

I ran the thx update program and it downloaded the 1.06 bios update to the temp folder. I've attached it here if anybody wants it... i was hoping for release notes or something but there's no docs whatsoever.

EDIT: Oops, I thought I attached it. Looks like I can't add it to the post, so I'm placing it on google drive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1...sp=sharing

Sure, happy to help. Funny name.

So sifting through 90 pages here, can this do any modern gaming? I mean, I know it's not running COD on high, but can it run more than Minecraft at passable levels?

It's been mentioned several times, this is not a gaming laptop. If gaming is a high priority you need to be looking at heavier, more expensive devices that can handle the load. My best advice at this point, would be to hold out for a ryzen 4000 series laptop if gaming is a priority, that, or a gaming specific laptop with a dedicated gpu. Either way, it's going to cost more to game decently on a laptop.

This motile laptop is a budget ultrabook. Emphasis on small, light, portable. perfectly acceptable for regular applications in windows, or linux.
