To all who are interested in upgrading to BIOS 1.06:
The THX updater service kicks off the upgrade and can be found in this folder:
C:\Program Files\THX

thx-update-svc.exe should be run as Administrator.

It will connect to the motile website and download all of the update files to C:\Windows\Temp

Once you reboot it will prompt you to update the BIOS.

It will attempt to run
Code:
C:\Windows\Temp\AFUWINx64.exe C:\WINDOWS\Temp\PF4PU1FN106.ROM /X /R /B /P /N /K /L /REBOOT
in a DOS command window

It will reboot your machine after it runs if it is successful, Otherwise the window will just close.

Mine failed with this error code:
Code:
d4 - Error: The system DMI data size is greater than ROM file's DMI data length
I had to remove the /R from the command line and re-run via Powershell as administrator.

To add to this, in case you don't want the THX updater to automatically run...

Go into Task Scheduler. In the left pane, expand the Task Scheduler library, then go into the THX folder. Under the THX Spatial Audio folder you'll see a task for the THX Update Service. Right click and select disable to stop it from running.

Also curious if anybody's had any negative experience with the new BIOS update. Does it change the model to the M141 or lose the Windows key like the previous updates?

No issues with either BIOS update - 1.05 and 1.06 are fine for me.
Windows says M142, BIOS says M141, but Windows Key remained

Ugh, why can't they release a correct BIOS lol.

As an aside, the model/manufacturer/etc info in windows can be modified in the registry.

Question...I got the laptop and have been using it a few weeks and love it. I have done zero updates. To be honest I don't know what you guys are talking about with driver and bios stuff. Are those things I have to update? Everything has been working great so far so I don't see a purpose.

Everything has been working well but I ran into a problem when trying to shutdown my computer.

As soon as I shutdown the computer auto restarts.

I've tried turning off fast boot.

Tried shutting down plugged in and unplugged.

When I hold down the power button it does shutdown however I assume that's not good for the machine?

Anyone having this problem or know a fix?

Bios is something to be left to people who understand what they are doing. I would not worry about it in your case, just stick with the windows updates and amd/intel driver updates

Adding on to this. Thanks for the info on BIOS by the way.
I used BIOS update guide linked in Wiki and flashed App.nsh in the DMI tool folder from Motile website to fix the model number in BIOS. All seems fine so far but with 1.0.6, keyboard light keys still not changing the brightness. It's fine for me but just noting that.

If it's working fine for your needs, no need to update anything. Mine has been the same way - works perfectly for what I do (which is not heavy-duty gaming) and it's been trrouble-free.

It should be noted that these bios updates are addressing very specific customer complaints regarding this model laptop. The 1.06 addresses problems with screens going black and not coming back from sleep states. If you look around, those are the biggest customer complaints on the web regarding this model laptop.

My BIOS updated automatically to 1.06. The on screen symbol for the brightness change isn't showing up but the brightness is changing normally.

Minimum gfx requirement is GTX 660 which is still signifcantly faster than Vega8... so no:

Side note: What is the key press to get into the BIOS at startup? TAB doesn't work for me. I can get into it from the settings menu in Windows but that a bit of a hassle.

Also the BIOS update worked fine on mine. The updater didn't work the first time I ran it but it worked when I restarted it (I believe it auto ran). BIOS shows 1.06 now.
