I'd expect between 2-3 hours if you're gaming, and about 4-5 from light usage. With laptops like this, its always a good idea to have the power cable with you constantly

I bought last year's model when it was being clearanced at costco and added a second drive for more space. You would be lucky to get 2 hours gaming on it. I think 3-4 hours browsing unless this year's model is somehow tremendously more efficient.

Consider the y545 as well:

540 has better thermals and has a more understated look, but the 545 comes with a 2060 for $100 more.

It's not a laptop you buy for battery life.

That's an even better deal. The 2060 isn't a huge upgrade, but it's not a replaceable item and will help extend the usable life of the laptop.

It has 3 different modes. Performance: the battery goes for 1 hour without lags. 2 hours browsing, watching movie etc.
Balanced: about 1 hour 30min gaming. Browsing about 2 hours as well.
Quite: up to 3 and 1/2 hours.
I have this one 17' but with i5-9300.
The power brick is massive and heavy. So you would wanna grab that brick with you most of the time.

Does it have an empty External bay to add more storage?

It should. I ordered the previous Y540 deal from Lenovo about a week ago and it came with a regular HDD and a M.2 SSD. My guess is they just leave the other bay open on this version.

I wouldn't go for Y545. Check out Dave2ds comparison on YouTube, overall the 540 is better

You're right. Bottom line I got is that the Y740 > Y540 > Y545 in terms of cooling.

The performance difference between the mobile 1660TI and RTX2060 is miniscule, nothing like the difference between the desktop versions. The only reason to go for the 2060 would be if you care about ray tracing. But even then the rtx2060 is not fast enough to really get any benefit from ray tracing. Hence I would stick with the 1660ti here. Not to mention the y540 has better thermals and looks way better than the y545.
