Because 12TB and 14TB are the highest/newest densities. You pay more for newer tech. If you just want cheap storage you don't go for the biggest and newest.
2TB more come on! I want 16TB drives to backup my 8TB drives that backup 4TB drives lol

Need something closer to $12.5/tb. I had the 12tb ready for pickup at $180 and end up not getting it. Why are these so expensive?

at $210 that's only $15/TB. The full price for 7200 RPM runs around $25/TB.

That's why I pulled the trigger on WD 8tb x 3 for $300 deal. I don't mind having more drive bays occupied since I have two of those 15 bay cases from a previous deal. If you are constrained by available drive bays or simply want the newest, then this is the only option. Just want to point out that there are often better deals per tb wise.

What case was this?

When HDs are around $100 each, if they die on you out of warranty, it's not a huge amount of data or money. When you start getting these huge drives over $200, it's a bigger hit in the gut when you lose one of these drives.

A big HD gives you convenience of not having to use multiple drives/split data or span volumes, but I look at it as increased risk. For me 8 TB for around $110 is about my comfort/risk limit.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall (or fail in the case of HDs).
