If you are doing weddings or events dual is a must have. I would almost go as far to say it is irresponsible of the photographer if they don't.

5d if you are getting paid eos for hobby
Dual cards slots a must for paid work
The autofocus was horrendous and way worse than my SL2, which surprised me. The R (using EF lenses via the adapter) was constantly hunting for focus. I was testing it out at a fashion shoot and it really struggled. There's a weird delay through the viewfinder of when you take a pic and it taking it. I shared the camera at the office and everyone noticed the same, so isn't just something I was noticing being used to the SL2. I'm willing to bet that's some hidden setting though. The eye detect autofocus was complete garbage though and consistently failed to hit the target (again this was well lit models on bright colored backgrounds, very contrasty). For most of the shoot I ended up switching to manual because it just couldn't give consistent, fast results.
This was before the firmware update, but by all accounts that was an incremental improvement, so I'm not confident these issues have been resolved. Again though, I very much seem to be the only one having such a horrible experience so who knows.
I'll be renting an A7 II/III shortly, I hear they're great with Canon glass and assuming it isn't the hot mess the R was, that's the direction I'll be going in. I say all this as a lifelong Canon fanboy and defender.
