Drop has their very popular and very highly reviewed Sennheiser HD58X headphones on sale for $135. If you are a new customer you can get a $20 coupon when you create a new account to bring these down to $115. I have a pair and they are well worth the money. You will want to use a headphone amp with these to get the most out of them. I use a Schiit Magni with mine.

Picked these up the last time they had this offer and I couldn't be happier with them. Easy to drive and they sound fantastic.

Compared to the other headphones I own or owned:

Philips SHP-9500 - I've had these headphones the longest and still own a set since they can't be beat for sound stage and makes a great gaming headphone (just attach a V-Moda boompro mic and off you go) but The 58X are the perfect upgrade. The 58X doesn't have the sound stage but they sound so natural and effortless in music reproduction. I now understand when reviewers say that the SHP-9500's sound grainy and thin. Compared to the 58X they are. I'll continue to sing the praises of my beloved SHP-9500's but when it comes to music I keep reaching for my 58X Jubilees.
Grado SR125 - These and the SR80s were my first bigger purchase when it came to headphones and they are treble and detail machines. It seems like as you climb the Grado product line the low end becomes more recessed and the treble becomes more harsh. The 58X is just smooth and relatively neutral (although the bass may be ever so slightly bumped up)

I own(ed) quite a few other headphones but couldn't put them in the same category for proper comparison.

In the end if you want one of the best headphones that doesn't require, but would benefit from, an amp get the 58X Jubilee's. If you have to have the best of the best you may want to spring for the 6XX as it is supposed to have slightly more detail. Just keep in mind you would likely also want to invest in an amp to make the best use of the 6XX which will likely run another $100 or more.

That's my two cents. I hope it helps someone.
For those with no hi-fi experience, I'd easily recommend the HD 58X Jubilee. The HD 6XX is the better headphone, but more suited as your second/upgrade headphone, and here's why:

1.) HD 58X has more sub bass and liveliness in the upper mids, while the HD 6XX has more of a dry, neutral sound.
For new enthusiasts, this is more of the signature they expect, and it will still be a big upgrade from most off-the-shelf headphones, computer speakers, and TV speakers.

2.) The HD 58X is easier to drive well.
Both headphones usually get "loud enough," but without including a DAC/amp into the HD 6XX's budget (so it's not really a $50 difference, I'd say it's more like a $150 difference so you can also get a good amp), the HD 6XX may actually sound more congested and veiled than the HD 58X straight from a tablet or smartphone.

With that said... once you get the gear that stops holding the HD 650 back, it has the smoother, cleaner, more refined sound that you can listen to for 8 hours and still enjoy it's more subtle but beguiling sound. I have the HD 58X Jubilee, HD 650 (= HD 6XX), and a bunch of other headphones.
For over $100 more, I would hope so too, but some people say otherwise, like rtings.com gives the AirPod Pro's a 6.5 rating (for sound) [rtings.com] and the 58X Jubilee's an 8.1 rating [rtings.com]. But these are 2 different types of headphones for totally different things. So to me they don't really compare, sound wise or functionality.

Are these good for multimedia? I.e. when the wife doesn't want the basement spreaker/sub making noise throughout the house?

weird, I have never had a problem to fit it on my head. I use ATH M50s for my desktop PC though. I don't wear a huge headphone outdoor.

I'm sure it's just an annoyance for me. The cups just twisted and turned too much for me. Lol

Now that I ordered one... Let me poke the hornets' nest. Ha ha

I recently compared a new HD58x and an old worn HD600 and they are very similar. With the exception of volume and a minor bit of EQ, there isn't really a difference between those headphones. The famous HD600 is quieter than HD58x so it's easier to use a phone to drive an HD58x. I don't know which one is the best sounding of the two because one headphone sound better than the other depending on the recording.

I recently became a fan of oluv's gadgets on youtube. He does some of the best headphone reviews while busting some myths. The following are some relevant videos.

Does the sound of a headphone improve with a dedicated amp? A lot of people seem to think that a headphone amp is required to make the HD600 sound at its best. Here is a video where oluv does a blind A B test with an HD600 (the blind AB test is later in the video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpAcf6KwfmQ

HD58x vs HD600 vs original recording AB test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdNgbkPDujw

HD58x vs HD6XX vs HD600 vs original recording test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eVUw2MdhHk

My main problem with youtube videos is the audio quality. It's not possible to truly hear the sound of a headphone this way. However, those videos do give some idea for those that can't try the headphones in person.
I have the original HD580's (300ohm) and to me the HD58X's (150ohm) have a bit more and cleaner bass (only have tested with my Schiit Magni amp). Your HD600's is 300ohm, which is why you get half the volume you get out of the HD58X's. Also, amp vs no amp, really depends on what you are using to drive them to begin with. I may be a bit off, but this is how I understand it, using info from my car stereo days... If you under amp speakers then you tend to drive your amp, closer or maxed out (on volume), which can cause clipping in the amp, which means hi's and low's won't sound as good as they should, or in extreme cases, when bass hits, volume will go down a bit overall and lose sound quality. Also, when under-powering speakers, you need to add more volume, which will drain the battery on your phone/tablet a lot faster then with an external amp (with external power/battery).

So, if you can drive them with your phone at a volume that is acceptable to you and battery drain issues isn't a concern, then an amp might not be a requirement for you.

I also have watched many of Oluv's videos and like his reviews and you can't get the exact way a headphone sounds, you can at least get a decent idea of differences in between the 2 in the A/B testing...

Here is another review of the HD58X from Z Review [youtube.com] , which he compares the HD58X to the HD 660s ($500) and can't tell much of a difference.

This or hd6xx? Without considering the 50$ price difference. Please do not say it depends on your taste. For casual listening which one would you buy, if you were to buy only one?
6XX all day everyday.

These sound very good and would give you a very accurate sound... but... for personal TV/Movie watching you may want something a bit more portable and have more bass... something like Skullcandy's Crushers [amazon.com] bluetooth headphones with an additional sub driver that lets you "feel" the bass.

How do these compare to the Phillip's x2hr? Bought those for $99 a few weeks ago but still in the return period.
At $100, the X2 HR is a no brainer. If you return them, you will miss them. You likely will not see them at that price again for some time.

I bought these a few years ago and love them. They are easily in the top 5 headphones in this price range and many people would say they are the best.

Nope, but again depends on what you are looking for... the original poster asked "Are these good for multimedia? I.e. when the wife doesn't want the basement speaker/sub making noise throughout the house?"... To me the Skullcandy Crusher fits his/her needs, with a decently reviewed "Basshead" headphone, that is wireless and doesn't require a cord extension to get the headphone to a seated area... Gives the bass response he/ I would be looking for.. Now if they were watching a concert or music videos, then the HD58X would be better.

Here is a review of them [bassheadspeakers.com], rated 2nd, between the Meze 99 Classica and the V-Moda LP2.

I see free returns on the site. Do they charge for shipping return costs too? Debating trying these out for gaming with a V-MODA Boompro for gaming.
I don't know how you would use these with a BoomPro. These have a split cord design with bi-pin connectors. Go for the Philips SHP 9500 or X2 HR. They both have standard 3.5mm connectors and both are excellent choices.

If you haven't already bought the mic, you could use one of the Antlion Audio ModMics [antlionaudio.com]. Their mics are designed to be added to any headset.

The prototype of HD58x that was sent to reviewers had a foam glued to the back of the magnet. So, once your HD58x arrived, make sure you add this foam back. Without this foam to damp, the bass, treble and sound stage all suffer.

Fortunately, such a recovery mod is extremely easy. The back cover is very easy to open, just use a flat screw driver wrapped with heat-shrink tube or alike, so you won't scratch the plastics. Find some foam that's 5 mm or thicker, cut them into 3/4" round pads. Use Loctite Vinyl, Fabric & Plastic glue; it is cheap but flexible - ideal for this usage.

The sound is totally true, with instruments being out of the head, very comfortable for long listening. Oh, the cups are stiff, compared to HD580, so you have to bend the metal bands to be comfortable.

Weird... I haven't seen this mod, I have seen the one where people take out the foam that sits between the drivers and ear pads, and the foam piece that is as large as the ear cups and protects from dust coming through the grills... I have removed that foam piece in my old HD580's, which was a popular mod for them and the 600's and 650's...

Are those headphones still good for non amp/DAC driven computer hook ups?
