FYI All solid wood, Sitka tip......

..is there any benefit (or downside) to the fender headstock and the tuners?

The string tree pretty much corrects the break angle of the strings over the nut, so not really.

These may be all solid wood, but this particular model is a bit boxy sounding.

These sound really thin. It's hard to get much tone out of a small body, especially with a low build cost.

I think Fender just wants something that looks like it compares to the Martin 000 on paper.

More like a 0/parlor size body and 00 at best.
The next size up (Newporter) seems more like a 000 size.

Don't like to have an extra layer of paint on the top ... the piece of wood that matters the most and needs to vibrate.
Personally for an acoustic guy like myself I would never own something with that headstock.
But the straight up tuning peg alignment will make tuning a little easier and less binding on the nut. My old USA Breedlove has that similar alignment and I swear the same model/gauge strings feels a little less tension on the fingers.

I recently bought a Yamaha acoustic electric from guitar center on price match from musicians friend where they offered 17% discount during chat. Recommend to chat or call to haggle, if buying from either of these, which seem to be same company.

Would this be any good for somebody that's looking to start learning how to play?

Look at the Yamaha FG800 or FS800 series guitars. They start at $200 and are a better guitar IMO.

I tried to use a cached web page, which added it to the cart, but on checking out right away, I got the message:

"The Item California Malibu Classic Acoustic-Electric Guitar Hot Rod Red Metallic was removed from your cart because it is unavailable."

Definitely OOS, yes.
