A.O. Smith Signature Premier 50-Gallon Tall 10-year Limited 4500-Watt Double Element Electric Water Heater with Hybrid Heat Pump

Some Lowe's locations are clearing these out for $699 (regularly $1,299). My utility offers a $350 rebate for switching to a heat pump model, so it'll pay for itself very quickly at that price. YMMV as many locations are out of stock.

$699 by me and $400 utility rebate.

Should I replace my gas hot water heater for electric? I have 10.4 kW solar panels and my hot water heater is old.

This is misinformation. I know first-hand that these locations are not clearancing out the heaters. They have an instant discount from the local utility company. There is a sticker under the price at this location stating so. It also likely disqualifies you from getting a rebate from your utility company if you read the rebate terms. My locality definitely states that a rebate from another utility company invalidates the rebate. YMMV

So when I view them at the reading store it says under the 699 price that there are rebate available. I am curious if I drive there and then buy if I can still get the peco rebate.

With gas you will have hot water even without electricity .

I put a similar model in three years ago. It's paid for itself. Very happy mine is a ge. However I would not replace a gas for one of these we didn't have gas in our house.

You should replace your WH with an on-demand gas heater. Heat pump WH are better than electric, nearly on par with a tank gas heater (for cheap electric rates), but a gas on-demand is better if you are in a climate with a heating season.(the heat pump WH does not have a outside coil, so it pulls heat from your house... Not great in the winter)

I bought one of the thankless ebay gas water heaters for $90 , ( This is a temporary install to see if it works ) It works great !

First, that's a very appropriate typo for an ebay buy.

Second, I'm super-dam-cheap but there is exactly zero chance I would trust a $90 WH to provide uninterrupted service 365 days a year for years on end. I might still buy one, but I would also put a small 5-10 gallon heater in series so that when that $90 heater went toes up right before my wife took a shower I would not end up murdered in my sleep.
