It scrapes up all the dead grass (thatch) that sits below the top layer of grass. The alternative is to rake it up, but instead this will save your back and do the job better in half the time. I've used this thing for years and it's worth it's weight in gold as they say. Don't just take my word for it, read the reviews. For this price, it's a slick deal! ($2 shy of the lowest price ever back in 2017)
I saw this and also thought it was a good deal but I'm thinking the slightly more powerful motor and scarifier attachment of the Sun Joe might be better. Only two year warranty compared to Greenworks four years but reviews seems to indicate better customer service on Sun Joe than Greenworks. 🤔

Looks like Walmart matched the price. Possible opportunity to save a couple more bucks through cashback sites.
Had a look at the Sun Joe as others mentioned the added attachment. But half the warranty and double the % of negative one and two star reviews has given me pause on Sun Joe.

I live in Massachusetts but will usually do this once in the fall before I overseed. I sometimes do it in the spring but not even sure if that's necessary

Good to know, I'm right next door in rhody, thx for the info
I have the sun Joe version of this. It works really well. I would suggest thatching while ground is wet. I have a new home so I did a ton last year. My yard looks much healthier as well. I had the dethatcher rake but this saved my back. Lastly when doing this I found that keeping the chord to the inside helps greatly.
