Why would you ever use this? You want the dead grass to decompose and replenish the soil.
yes you do want some of the dead grass to decompose and replenish the soil but too much thatch also takes too long to decompose and can block nutrients from penetrating.

Being a new home, I had to do this a lot because the dead grass stunted the growth of some of the other grass.

Why would you want to turn a natural decomposing process into an energy intensive removal process?....

Just let that shit be
It can also pull up moss and dead grass. All that will prevent a barrier crowding out new grass and blocking nutrients.

Bought it last year, my yard was a mess so it pretty much removed everything.
This year I removed half the pegs and I use it as monthly maintenance to remove weeds that grow sideways, I'm trying to establish an Argentine Bahia grass lawn.

I got this for $85 back in August 2018. Haven't unboxed it yet. This Greenworks alert is a curse.

I was going back and forth between Greenworks or the Sun Joe.

Found a few videos on comparing them, both vote Sun Joe for their own reasons but enough to mamke me hold out till Sun Joe lowers their price...

I bought this last year and have used it twice on my lawn where we get a lot of moss. It works really well. It pulls up all the crap that shouldn't be there without doing too much damage to the grass. My lawn seems to be in much better shape this winter and should make my spring feeding a lot more effective.

The nutrients are in the soil already, the f***?
Not sure what kinda magic soil you have but around here any useful nitrogen or phosphor is gone with the spring rain leaving soil that will barely grow a dandelion. getting just a little fertilizer down into there works wonders. Whats the alternative? Dont dethatch, have an impenetrable layer of dead thatch on your yard, pay for and put down 2x as much fertilizer, so that half of it can end up in the river and kill all the fish. Which option sounds better?

So I assume you've never ever used this stuff called fertilizer? Also, the thatch prevents sunlight and moisture from reaching seedlings. It also prevents overseed from making its way to the dirt. You want to dethatch when you get over like 1/2" of thatch. 1x a year or so.

It scrapes up all the dead grass (thatch) that sits below the top layer of grass. The alternative is to rake it up, but instead this will save your back and do the job better in half the time. I've used this thing for years and it's worth it's weight in gold as they say. Don't just take my word for it, read the reviews. For this price, it's a slick deal! ($2 shy of the lowest price ever back in 2017)
It also scratches/cuts (scarifies) the top surface of the soil, which helps get water in. Where I live it is hot and dry, with clay soil, and the surface of soil can become almost waterproof between watering/rain. When it rains, a lot runs off before it can then soak in. Regularly breaking the surface (and amending with compost) helps.

I have a rear tine tiller with a set of 10 straight tines that functions as an overseeder and aerator. The tines only cut in a couple inches, with the depth depending on how it is being operated. I mention because it breaks the surface of the soil.

I have had my eye on this specific dethatcher for several years. This is a good price (82) and is usually around 120 when I think I want one. A couple years ago I saw one on the clearance isle at WM for $75. Like every year, I will probably think about getting this one and make a decision too late and put off yet again.

Reviews say that it has a temperamental motor which requires a heavier gauge extension cord to prevent motor overheating and shutdown. Reviews also say to only pull straight, with turns causing the springs to break.
