Best bang-for-the-buck in this price range? I think yes.

Overall best bang-for-the-buck? Debatable of course. The $85 Ryzen 5 1600 AF "refresh" (which I think should have been named the Ryzen 5 2550) is an awful lot of bang-for-the-buck. LINK [amazon.com]

Note Microcenter In-Store-Only has this CPU for $170 and $20 off a compatible motherboard. LINK [microcenter.com]
5 years ago, I would say you would be correct. Anymore though, unless you do processor intensive workloads (video editing, etc), you will not see any difference between a $100 AMD chip and a $500+ chip. Most games will only see a few FPS gains from a bigger processor (won't be noticeable in gameplay) and everyday tasks won't see any gains. If you do processor heavy tasks, then by all means, go all out on the processor, but normal users just won't see the benefit for the cost difference.
Good deal! Best bang for the buck in a CPU no matter your workload.

Same recommendation. The refresh really is a different chip, as seen by two distinct peaks at userbenchmark. The best 1600 benchmark score is a little better than the worst 3600 benchmark.

The 3600 is clearly better, but if your budget is tight you cold get the 1600af and spend a little more on your mobo. Then you could upgrade to a higher end zen2 chip in the future.

Bummer, getting this delivered from amazon today for $190. Probably wont have time to build until next week anyways. Oh well, thanks for sharing OP. Still the best consumer chip on the market right IMHO.

Would this be good to pair with the strix 2080ti card that is also on sale?

For those who have one nearby...

$169.99 at Micro Center. Plus $20 off when bundled with eligible motherboard. Includes XBOX Game Pass Offer.

If you are going to drop $1,000 on a graphics card, why not spend another $100 or so on the CPU and future proof it a little more? For gaming today, you won't see any benefit between this and the the 3700x or 3800x. However, if you do any video encoding or something that takes advantages of the extra cores, it's worth it if you have the money. Future games may take advantages of more cores as well.

I have this for my home PC. I have the Gigabyte X570 Aorus mITX motherboard (bios post is a bit weird, but overall stable) and 2x16GB dimms. My primary use case is office/browsing, a small kubernetes cluster under docker desktop and diablo 3 (1050TI video card, does 4K everything turned on over 65fps). everything runs great, low power. stays nice and cool.

As with any CPU/motherboard combo, if you're near a microcenter, they're almost always cheaper.

Good for a 1080p Plex streaming setup? It will be a fairly simple server, maybe 5-6 streams at a time.
