Getting ready for 25 comments asking if this has a second RAM slot...

I will save you all the hassle, it does NOT have a second slot for RAM. RAM is single channel/slot only.

is the chassis made of metal?
bottom lid definitely metal . there is a thermal pad contacting the ssd which is kinda unnecessary most of the time anyway you coulld try to thermal pad the cpu heat sink but it's right above the perforated part of the lid which would give limited surface area contact as well as blocking the ventillation effect of the perforation.

Its super easy to remove. Part of a letter actually fell off when i accidentally touched it agaisnt the box. I then slowly peeled the whole letter off leaving no residue. I returned the laptop though... with 1 letter missing hah
Ha, ok that actually definitely answers my question — hopefully mine peel off just as easily!

Anyone that does 3d printing please chime in. If I grab this and throw 8gb ram in it, will this be sufficient to give as a present to someone who wants to get into 3d printing?

Obviously it doesn't print anything, but will this handle software to do 3d print designs? Any thoughts are appreciated!

For sure. 3D printing slicer apps don't require much power. They could connect to the printer over USB, or copy files to an SD/MicroSD card. It's plenty qualified to use with a 3D printer.

Edit: If you mean actually creating 3D models... It could certainly benefit from having 8GB ram, but the CPU/GPU will be make rendering a bit slow. It really depends on the software they're using. If it's a cloud-based app, no problem. Stuff like Tinkercad (web-based) would work just fine.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant was creating models. My dad is a machinist who has programmed CNC for years. Coming up to retirement and was thinking about grabbing him a 3d printer to use in his spare time, and maybe get him into creating designs. But I know his old laptop wouldn't work for any of that.

Since he is pretty advanced I think anyway, Tinkercad probably isn't from him. He programs G code on old machines by hand on the keyboard on the machine. Still saves his stuff to floppy disk ha! From my minimal research Fusion 360 seems right up his alley with a bit of a software learning curve so that's what I was really asking about. Said research was done after posting this, should have done that to be more detailed first.

Dude from the subreddit says this thing can barely handle Minecraft? Are you kidding me? We had 80386's from 1994 running Doom which had better graphics than Minecraft.

Somebody want to explain that?

Not sure how CPU intensive that game is, but there's a ton of benchmark vids for this CPU, including laptops that are only single channel as well.

That dock uses displaylink which has it's own graphics chipset, it's not passing through the video signal from the laptop as a simple converter if the USB-C natively supported video output.
So does anybody think this would support dual monitors (22/19inch x2) out of the box? (thinking of keeping the case closed at all times).

Or is the GPU just not their.

Not for gaming just dual screen work stuff/email/office/ etc

Trying to decide between getting this or a small foot print desktop...

8gb is an absolute must in win8, Has anyone tried it at 16/12gb?

Wow, I wasn't aware of that. I think 16gb should be more than enough. Thanks.

Youre right, I got this laptop to do some programming and I usually have multiple tabs open, I think 16gb is more than enough though.
So in a nut shell what's the difference between the r3/r5? Bigger pipes/cache? More cores?
Or just clock speed?

The GPU is technically capable, but only one external port for video (HDMI) is present on this laptop.

However, it supports 4K@60Hz so you could use one higher resolution monitor/HDTV in the 40-42" range that would be the equivalent of four 1080P smaller displays.

Indeed. Get this, slap Ubuntu on it [ubuntu.com], and join us at Motile Linux [reddit.com]. Smilie
I'm very tempted, had a first gen ryzen 2500u and it was horrible for battery life in linux.
Is 2nd gen that much better?

Not sure if it was in Reddit or this thread, but to whoever said you can remove the "Motile" logo on the top of the lid, you are correct! The letters for the logo are attached by adhesive. I used a plastic non-marring tool to push/scrap them off. Don't push too hard...but the logo does come off. Used an alcohol wipe to remove sticker residue. Now, it has a clean look on the lid.
