Getting ready for 25 comments asking if this has a second RAM slot...

I will save you all the hassle, it does NOT have a second slot for RAM. RAM is single channel/slot only.

How much of a buzz kill is that at this day and age?

It really depends on which version of the engine you want to learn on. If you're just building small to medium sized maps you should be fine, but it'd really be worth the extra $100 for the Ryzen 5 version.
Thanks. It would be pretty simple. Probably an empty 3d room with a ball. Thinking of making it a Middle School Coding club demo.

It's not hard because that's how it's supposed to work. Good memory management means that the system doesn't page anything until available RAM is depleted. You're confusing free memory with available memory. Typical users absolutely do not need more than 4GB of RAM, and will see zero difference in system performance.

There is almost no difference in performance between single channel and dual channel performance outside of max load server applications, and this has been proven time and time again. Unless you can perceive a difference in performance down the NANOSECOND, you will see literally no difference between the two, unless you're running some synthetic benchmark and seeing 50 vs 53 nanoseconds in read rate.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "power user" because that term has been used quite loosely vs when it was coined decades ago. I am by all measures a "power user" and I assure you that if you're using this computer for compiling millions of lines of code, encoding or decoding media content, running a virtual network in VMware workstation or attempting to play any AAA game titles from the past several years then you are doing it wrong.

It's a $200 laptop that's meant to appeal to the large majority of people who just use their systems for browsing the web, doing general office work, or watching videos. It is perfectly suited for exactly that and will not benefit any appreciable amount from the added expense of 8GB vs 4GB, and not at all in dual channel mode vs single channel mode.
You are correct but you will get downvoted to oblivion. This idea that you need 8GB of RAM and 16 is optimal is a myth. 16GB of RAM on a machine like this is ridiculous and won't make one iota of real world difference for 99% of people. People don't know better since those who buy into it don't even try the machine with 4GB of RAM before replacing it. The machine runs well at stock. Chrome is designed to use free RAM (since it is free/unused), so people see high % RAM use and assume they need more.

Real world performance matters more than synthetic benchmarks. Embrace the Motile.

I use the motile for work everyday. upgraded to 16gb ram. Using 5GB of that ram as ram based ssd to cache stacks of thousands of small images for a software to review on a 4K 27 inch monitor.. It's great to not cache the images to the m2 ssd. upgraded AX200 wifi is great to retrieve the set of data from the server over wifi.

Negative. It isn't hard to consume over 4GB of RAM with even moderate everyday use. I agree 8GB is the functional minimum to ensure smooth usage for everyone but power users.

That not withstanding, having a second RAM module allows the CPU to access the RAM in dual channel mode, increasing performance even at lower RAM consumption workloads.

* Power users would benefit from even more than 8, especially for a bit of future proofing.
Does anyone have a comparison how big a deal is dual channel vs single ram for say the high end (16gb)?

*laughs in red state TN 9.25% sales tax*

Your politics are powerless here.
Your tax rate on this at $199 would be $18.41. More than said person you mentioned. Higher taxes than the person you mentioned, and you pay that everywhere. I live in a blue state but a area that is generally red. My tax on this is $15.12, so lower than your rate by a bit. Factor in the $4 and it bumps it just over your rate. However I pay less every day on taxable stuff than you do if you can figure out the math. And so does the person you mentioned. Laugh it up bud.

Maybe in some other higher price laptop. Motile laptops both versions certainly don't have any DP or PD function in in the usb C. Data only.

I think that boat has already set sail a long time ago and probably not returning...

No usb c native display output. You will need some sort of usb video adapter with displaylink
... Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-D...B075HM6YLZ

USB-C and DisplayPort are two completely different interfaces. You are confusing USB-C with Thunderbolt, which is an Intel interface that uses either the miniDP or USB-C connector. You do not need a Thunderbolt connector to use a USB-C monitor.

Guys i finally just went in for this yesterday after about 3 weeks of looking at it. I am not disappointed at all for $200. I primarily purchased this laptop to surf the web/watch movies/youtube/porn.

I LOVE the build quality, aluminum chassis and sturdy hinge design. The screen is plenty bright and very crisp to look at, was surprised at how great the overall picture was. The bezel around the screen is thin which gives it a premium look. After about the first 15 minutes of use the laptop settled down in fan noise/load. There is very little to no noticeable lag, when switching tabs/loading programs/videos/web surfing. If anything loading times are probably attributed to my garbage DSL ISP. I did not upgrade the 4gb ram or stock ssd or wifi card. Its doing perfectly fine. No wifi dropouts. This is only an assumption but i think this laptop would run fine loading office software for someone like a student, although then they would problably also benefit from ram and storage upgrade. I installed chrome and its doing perfectly fine even with all my plugins. I know its probably bad but i keep my laptop on my chest in bed. Its warm but not hot and the fan spins on "low" very seldomly only when i try to multitask other programs with 5 tabs already open. It is not at all loud or anything to complain about, otherwise the fan is damn near silent/off when just web browsing. The touchpad tracks well and is very responsive even with the protective sticker on top. If you press to click the click on the touchpad is a teeny bit on the loud side. The speaker sound is a little bit mediocre since my previous laptop had a woofer. This is like new flat screen tvs where the volume level doesnt really change intensity when you go above 50%. Just trying to be as real with you guys as i can be.

If i had to complain about anything it would be that my screen has a bit of backlight bleed in the top left of the screen, seen here: https://imgur.com/gallery/L4uvSnt. Its also on the top right but top left is more prominent. It is totally not noticeable when the computer is in use, only becomes an issue when viewing an image that is all black in fullscreen. Im guessing quality is going to vary so im just going to go ahead and keep this.

I would still recommend this laptop to anyone that is hesitant about purchasing it. I dont think this laptop is worth the $600 MSRP but i think it beats some $300 some odd dollar chromebooks and PCs. I would persuade people who want a laptop with better specs/overall quality for the same price to curb their expectations.
