Great CPU at a very low price. It has been solid as a rock for me on a MSI B450 Tomahawk.

It will depend when the MOBO was made. If it's been sitting on a shelf somewhere since the 400 chipset was released it will probably need to be updated.

If it was recently manufactured or the retailer opened it up and flashed it then no you shouldn't have to. Generally (but not always) the box will have a "AMD Ryzen Desktop 3000 Ready" label on it to let you know. I bought an MSI Performance Gaming Plus B450 MOBO from Amazon Warehouse last week and it had that label on it, although i used it with a Ryzen 5 1600 "AF" CPU anyway.

In my case I did have to update the MSI B450 motherboard first. I used a USB 2.0 stick formatted MBR and did the update headless/without the CPU installed (MSI how to use Flash Bios Button on Youtube). The formatting of the USB stick is very important when updating the B450 via the Flash BIOS button and it took me 5 or 6 tries before I finally used Rufus instead of Windows to do the USB format and then it went fine. I went to V1A at first and it worked fine and several months later I went to the V1D BIOS for giggles (living on the edge) and it still works fine.

Thanks for the tips! Gotta decide if I play it safe by getting a 2700X or update the motherboard with the slightly better 3600. Don't want to turn it into a brick Confused

Any input on upgrading from a 8 core 1600. I know know, but some 1700s were branded as 1600 cause they ran out of stock, so 2 extra cores for free. Should I go to a 3600 and sacrifice the 2 core advantage?

Bestbuy does price match Microcenter (i used to work for BBY) but BBY won't price match Micro Center's combo deals. But 100% they can price match Microcenter. If BBY wanted to be annoying, they'd called Microcenter to see if they had it in stock first.
