i7-1065G7 + MX230 is a good combination actually. You can't game but good enough for daily tasks. Price is very competitive so it must have some drawbacks. When look at the specs I see 17.3-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Non-touch WVA Display without any brightness info. One 8 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz RAM. We don't know if we can add another 8 and run in dual channel. Also comes with relatively small 3-Cell, 42 WHr, Integrated battery.
Not worth it IMO.

i have purchased the inspiron 3000 series laptops before.

They are absolutely terrible in terms of build quality. DO NOT get them. It doesn't matter if it has a core i9 or a gtx 1660 they SUCK unless if ytou plan to plug it in and never use it on the go. I made sure to return my dell 3000

Horrible keyboard flex. Heavy. Terrible terrible screen (washed out, poor viewing angles) etc.

I'm sure if I were to have kept it for a few years the keyboard would stop working or the hinges would break just like what happened to the 7000 and 5000 series inspirons that I've purchased.

I'm looking for a 17" laptop for my dad for regular tasks. He doesn't take it out of the house so portability isn't a big issue. He leaves it plugged in all the time. Is this a good deal for such a laptop or is this just a regular deal? I rarely see 17" laptops hit the deals pages so I'm not sure how to guage this deal.

Kind of. You have 3 tiers in inspiron line
As far as build quality goes:
Low: 3000 all plastic
Medium: 5000 maybe some aluminum
High: 7000 mostly aluminum

Love that this comes with the traditional 10-key. My one major gripe with the 700 series is that the PG UP and PG DN keys got moved. Gotta retrain my brain

XPSes are spiritual if not literal 9000s.
Latitudes are tiered similarly with build quality better across the board, more Enterprise management focused features, and generally more replaceable parts. However I haven't found the lat 3000s built much better than an Inspiron 3000.

Does anyone else think it's odd to pair the G7 graphics with the MX230? Benchmarks are pretty close

Intel gets to keep laptop prices high while AMD readies ryzen 4000 somehow I don't think even then will we see true competition resulting in lower prices to the consumer

I confirmed with Dell rep that the new 17" 3000 series has a 300 nit/100% srgb IPS full HD screen. When you see WVA on Dell they mean matte IPS. The TN screen is 1600x900 res and does not come in full HD. Currently the TN screen isn't an option. If this is true this is a super slick deal. I got the i5 with 512gb SSD for $584 after 10% off email sign up, plus 2% cab
