If you purchase OEM toner anyway, you may want to look at the MFC-L2750dw XL. On sale, it does go under $300, but it comes with a full TN770 and TN 760 cartridge. If you subtract the prices of the cartridges off the printer, the printer itself costs around $125 . It includes a fax, duplex copying using ADF, and a touch screen for that difference in price. It comes with 256 MB (twice that of this printer in this deal). This one does have the scan to email feature--I am not sure if the ones with the two-line display do or not.
Only quirk I have found so far is the envelope feeder (which seems to be an issue with all models) will work better if you set it to print at a higher resolution (maybe it pulls it through slower?). My model does not have the ADF, but I am considering one that does. I thought this info may be helpful, but I realize it is quite a bit more up front.
The MFC-L2750dw goes on sale for under $200. It comes with a starter cartridge that prints 700 pages. You would get the same features mentioned above but not as good of value due to including a starter instead of standard or xl cartridge.
However, for this difference you could put that toward a dedicated document scanner if you did not need the fax. I have an Epson ES-300w that runs off USB, battery, and AC. Very portable with ID scan and two-side. Very fast.
Went to slick deals and searched printer and here it was.
Only problem setting up is it would not see my wireless network during the software install.
I had to manually setup the wireless network on the printer console itself.
Not a big deal but worth mentioning to maybe save someone time.
To answer an earlier question someone asked about two sided scanning.
no it does not do two sided scanning.
The auto feeder does work well though.
This printer does do 2 sided printing.
It also has a button for copying both sides of an id on to one page.
All in all so far so good.
hopefully there are aftermarket toners available for this model.
The starter cartridge says it is good for 700 prints.

Amazon reviews have a lot of complaints about wifi / connectivity, etc though...
Update: I went on the Brother website - No duplex copying

Edit: Staples doesn't do price match. I didn't know that

thats because "people" can't Google and then assign a static dhcp address to the printer.

starter cartridge irrelevant. 8000 page 3rd party cartridges available for less than 12 dollar's.
For some reason the software on my PC did not detect my wireless network
Simply go to the printer itself press menu then find network then WLAN then it will see your SSID of your network
select it and then put in password and you will be connected.
Are you sure it will work with this model?
Some of the models now have chips that wont allow third party cartridges
