These have to be used within 90 days in case anyone misses the fine print.
Getting a lot of points easily:

bing.com/news [bing.com] on PC. Simply go here, then click on each link on the left. Each click is 5 points. You can get the max searches of 150 points per day in under a minute. Use Microsoft Edge to get 20 extra per day.
Completing "Daily set" on Bing mobile app. There are three clickable links from the app including one search, one quiz, and one survey. When you string multiple days in a row, you bonus points. This gets 30 to 60 points daily.
Completing news story searches on Bing mobile app. On the "Earn" section, click on the mobile icon and then click on all the news stories until you get the max. This takes the longest out of all of these three. 100 to 200 points daily depending on bonuses.

Doing this alone can get you about 10,000 points a month. Getting points from Rewards app on Xbox and completing Quests and Microsoft Rewards emails gets you more. Xbox Rewards app has the least points per time spent.

Also, here are more details about the rewards and history.

The 12 month Xbox live rewards are typically only available when it is a "Hot Deal". These rewards aren't gone. They are just less common. They just typically only show up when they are a "Hot Deal" about once a year. Points required are around 24k. (Edit - I think these are long gone!)
When redeeming for Xbox or Microsoft gift cards, they are applied to your account and expire within 90 days. Each reward redeemed has a specific expire date 90 days from applying.
When redeeming for Game Pass or Xbox live month rewards, the codes are sent for redemption and not automatically applied to account.
Below is a history of the recent "Hot Deals" (excluding dumb stuff like Skype that nobody cares about). As you can see, there was quite a dry spell recently before this and the last deal.

May 2020 - 3 Month Game Pass for 24,500 pts
March 2020 - $5 Microsoft GC for 4,000 pts (same as now)
January 2020 - $5 Xbox GC for 4,000 pts and $10 for 8,000 pts
July 2019 - 12 Month Xbox Live Gold - 22,500 pts
June 2019 - $5 Xbox GC for 4,000 pts and $10 for 8,000 pts
May 2019 - $5 Microsoft GC for 4,000 pts and $10 for 8,000 pts
April 2019 - 3 Month Xbox Live Gold for 12,000 pts
March 2019 - 3 Month Game Pass for 13,500 pts
February 2019 - $5 Xbox GC for 4,000 pts and $10 for 8,000 pts
December 2018 - 12 Month Xbox Live Gold - 24,000 pts
August 2018 - $5 Xbox GC for 3,750 pts or $10 for 7,500
June 2018 - 12 Month Xbox Live Gold - 24,000 pts
May 2018 - $ Microsoft GC for 3,750 and $10 for 7,500 pts
April 2018 - 3 Month Game Pass for 14,400 pts
February 2018 - $5 Xbox GC for 3,500 and $10 for 7,000 pts
January 2018 - 12 Month Xbox Live Gold - 21,000 pts

Both are same thing now. Once you redeem your reward, the 90 day clock starts. It used to be that you received a code via email which you had 12 months to redeem, and the 90 day clock started after that point. At any rate, 90 days is plenty of time to find a deal on something. Spring sale will be upon us within that time!

Microsoft store money goes on sale a few times a year... is this the usual sale? Or does it get better?

This is probably the best deal you will get. A couple years ago they did $10 for 7000 points, but 8000 had been the norm as if late.

That is nice, but how much do you expect to get off your new Xbox? I think I got over 9000 points in the first month, but when you sign up you have a few one off bonuses.

Good breakdown, but the 12 month codes are gone and probably not coming back. July 2019 was likely the last hurrah and they sold out quickly. If they do come back (highly unlikely) they'll sell out in a matter of days. There were way too many scalpers grabbing the codes and reselling them, then whining when they got taken away that it killed their livelihood (lol) - before last year, before Ultimate Game Pass became a thing, the Hot Deals were on something of a schedule, that all got thrown out the window. Now Microsoft is pushing people to get and stay in the Ultimate ecosystem, which is still easily doable with this program. 35K points for 3 months of Ultimate is easily achievable.

Remember that these gift cards can be used on hardware. A great way to knock off some cost for a new Series X in the fall.

True, but these cards expire in 90 days so getting them now is pointless. Especially if the rumors about the consoles being delayed due to the Corona epidemic pan out.

Agreed. I was unclear, the right strategy would be to save up points and wait for another deal in the fall after the console is released to cash them in. to be extra safe you could wait until the first hot deal AFTER the console is released to be sure you don't get screwed over by a delay.

I'm opting for the latter, but I'm also not a "Day 1" buyer, especially after seeing the growing pains of the last 2 generations now (RROD/YLOD of 360 and PS3, respectively for example) then the slims an super slims and X and Pro, and you get the idea. In 2 years we'll likely see (or at least have leaked specs or rumors of) a next-gen X/Pro equivalent that'll be the same price as this launch and better in every way, and by then the library will hopefully be mature enough to invest in the ecosystem. I have enough backlog plus Ultimate Game Pass to last me until then, I'm in no rush.

Thanks for this! I usually just save up and get the Amazon gift cards (which I don't think expire)

There are various methods to automate the search process if you're so inclined.

Is there a limit to how many of these gift cards we can cash out for? I was saving up for the $100, but getting 10 of these would be a better deal and if there is no limit I would do this instead. Thanks in advance for an answer!
I'm in the same boat. I have over 200,000 points that I was saving for a series x but if I cash them in now I could get a one x for $50 plus tax. I the past if I try to redeem multiple cards the first one shows right away and the others take a day or two. I don't know how it would work for 25 cards.
