Stocking up for Corona virus

940 257 March 1, 2020 at 10:57 AM in Chat
Hey guys,

Is anyone stocking up on "survival items" in fear of the Corona virus? So far I haven't, but I see a lot of the supermarkets empty from people like that here. Are the fears warranted, should I do the same?

Obviously not. My point was that the demographic that has the worst death rate would be 70+ (80+ even worse) with a comorbidity, which describes basically every nursing home in the country. "Critical" is about 5% of cases [jamanetwork.com] however JAMA didn't designate if these were the sole hospitalization. Also, the only deaths occurred in critical cases which was about half.

Actually/ 2% is high, much higher than the flu which is less than 1%.

Also less people get the flu, because they get the shot. There is no shot for this. I would bet most people that get a flu shot are at least 50. So the number of vulnerable people is much higher than the flu.

I am totally not worried about this and not doing anything different. I have maybe 3 days of food in my house for myself, and at least a months for the cats.

Either that or go down to the local Chinese place. Same difference. You ain't telling me that smooth, rubbery looking meat is "chicken". Maybe seagull as it seems like any place that has had a number of them nesting nearby (come in on the top of tour buses) seems to suddenly lose that flock if there's a Chinese place in the vicinity.

OK people, STOP hoarding crap. I tried to buy some rubbing alcohol for work today (medical device MANUFACTURING, you know, HELPING the situation) and it's sold out in many places. Not impossible to find, but I shouldn't have to drive around to 4 stores to find run of the mill isopropyl alcohol, if morons wouldn't go and clear the shelves.

Why media/gov say "don't panic" yet?

The Washington state people who died in US didn't even come in contact with covid people.

Somebody's not telling the truth.

Wikipedia says Spanish flu hit the young hard cause their immunity overreacted or something like that, whereas the old and babies immunity were useless which turn out to be a good thing.

What's up with Seattle, WA? First state to report covid. Now 9 dead.

It got loose in a nursing home. Morbidity and mortality from this virus among sick elderly patients is sky high. And it spreads REALLY easily in confined conditions.

Visit grandma now. And no, I'm not kidding.

For SDers, here's the recipe to make your own hand sanitizer.

Posting some links I sent to my family. Many things are obvious to some, maybe not for others. If anyone chooses to use a mask please read that article and use it appropriately or you can really endanger yourself.

For the kids because they hear things, my 8 year old nephew was talking about Disneyland back in January and told me it was closed because of the CV, kids talk in school... He didn't realize they were talking about another country at that time. : https://www.npr.org/sections/goat...oronavirus [npr.org]

In the next few days case numbers are going to skyrocket - but those are existing cases that were just unknown because widespread testing had not begun, so please try not to panic when that happens.

Most likely I wont be back in this thread but I hope that helps.
Great list, thanks.
