Stocking up for Corona virus

940 257 March 1, 2020 at 10:57 AM in Chat
Hey guys,

Is anyone stocking up on "survival items" in fear of the Corona virus? So far I haven't, but I see a lot of the supermarkets empty from people like that here. Are the fears warranted, should I do the same?

Amazon can't deliver to me for 4 days. Ridiculous.

Meanwhile, a man who was in quarantine here escaped (?), shoplifted, and rode on public transport. There's not enough members in the national guard to maintain control.

I was at BJ's yesterday which was a madhouse, and I saw a cop car outside which is very unusual. Then I overheard cashiers talking about how some guy tried to walk out with a TV. I guess he felt confident enough that business was so booming, no-one would catch him.

Regarding quarantine, it's really the honor system. There was a story of a guy that was on quarantine, did so for a few days then said fark it and took one his daughters to a school dance. I fully support jail time for such actions.

Well, here's the thing.... there's a difference between "prepping" and just plain having some amount of self-sufficiency. I'm generally the kind of person that doesn't like running out of stuff - TP, paper towels, laundry detergent, tissues, etc, so I keep stocked up throughout the year and get in on Amazon and Target sales and such. That means I probably have a good month or 2 (at least) of such products. I don't consider myself a "prepper".

A few years back when Hurricane Irene went through and we were out of power for 10 days I made a comment on an online forum that wound up being published in the paper, basically calling people out for not being even modestly prepared to take care of themselves for a few days. At the time people were actually complaining that the power company should put them all up in hotels and pay for their food!

What this recent "scare" has taught me is that the vast majority of people *are not* ready for any kind of disruption to daily life - they live life day by day and get caught with their pants down when even the slightest of issues might cause that to be disturbed (also why when we get over 6" of snow, milk and bread are gone from the shelves).

Even in Italy with the extreme quarantine, they are letting one family member go to grocery store.
Still not understanding the TP,
Water, hoarding.

True, but often the difference between those two is merely a matter of perception. Most likely the "extreme" preppers that come to mind are in the minority. People who simply live off the grid and who are mostly self sufficient aren't as crazy as the way they might be viewed by others.

Personally, I have hoarded toilet paper for years so I could probably go three months or so without having to buy any. Beyond that I don't keep a lot of extra stuff around. Since I stopped eating just about all processed/pre-packaged food a few years ago it is tougher to do any long-term storage of food. In a pinch, if I was forced to stay in my home for a month without any outside supplies I could get by, though it would be uncomfortable.

They're getting slammed on Twitter for being idiots.

I've mentioned that father and daughter and support jail time as well. They even went to a pre-dance party at someone's home.

I don't have a car so I stock up for awhile on heavy to carry items or things like TP and paper towels when renting a car. There are some extremely disturbing videos emerging of people fighting over TP - even with the elderly. Apparently there's now a black market for many supplies.

All of it is so damn selfish. I have health problems that make me susceptible to infections right now. Fresh healthy food and plenty of sanitation supplies are necessities. Each time I have to go to the ER, it's medical help that won't be available for someone else and it's entirely preventable.

I was at a local New England grocery store chain and two people in the parking lot were selling individual paper towel rolls (ripped out of multi-count packages) for $5 each and people were buying them.

They were also selling hand sanitizer and soap for ridiculous cash-only prices and people WERE ACTUALLY BUYING FROM THEM!!!

A bunch of grocery stores have announced they will closing at 8 PM , to allow employees to sanitize surfaces.

(Also off topic, but some buffet places are considering temporarily closing)

Until they end up with a serious non-virus medical issue and the hospital turns them away because they are full. All the spam in the world won't save them if that happens.
