Stocking up for Corona virus

940 257 March 1, 2020 at 10:57 AM in Chat
Hey guys,

Is anyone stocking up on "survival items" in fear of the Corona virus? So far I haven't, but I see a lot of the supermarkets empty from people like that here. Are the fears warranted, should I do the same?

Questionable article when it starts recommending healthy people DON'T wear masks!?

Masks do nothing AFTER infection!!

Fact: on another virus,
"The mean penetrations of viable MS2 through the N95 and P100 FFRs/cartridges were typically less than 2 and 0.03%, respectively, under all flow conditions."

Reducing the amount of virus particles inhaled is like social distancing.
LESS corona breathed in its ALWAYS better.

Regular surgical masks prevent the wearer from spreading respiratory droplets to others. They don't give any real protection to the wearer as people have been shown to touch their face more often when wearing them to adjust the mask, thus autoinnoculating themselves by bringing contaminants to their mucous membranes via their hands.

N95 masks can protect the wearer if donned and doffed appropriately and not reused.

All of this is pretty clearly discussed in the article.

I wanted to point out, because I see a lot of these masks floating around. If you see an N or P 95/99 cloth mask with a little plastic box in the front of it, this mask sends unfiltered air out of that hole. So, if the person who is wearing the mask is sick, this type of mask is less likely to protect others from the sick individual.

Then why are they prevalent in hospitals? Who is fearful of getting who sick?

Unless your breathing is routed ENTIRELY through a filtration element, no mask/"respirator" is going to be very effective. Surgical masks are probably the worst at this, as air flow occurs through the sides of the mask, both ways. The more fitted N95 style (typically molded to a cup shape) are perhaps a bit better but even then quite a bit of breath is routed through the gap between the mask and the wearer's face.

If anyone has ever worn one of these masks you'd realize this instantly. Is there any harm in wearing a mask? From a breathing perspective, probably not - I'd rather have 25% of the air I breathe filtered than 0%, however a side effect of wearing the masks is that you are now much more likely to touch your face (putting it on/adjustment/taking it off, etc).

So why do medical professionals wear them if they don't do much? Well, for the average person that isn't really in much danger of catching anything, it's not a big deal, but if you're around sickness the entire day, it would probably do a caregiver much more than the average person. Also, people in the health professions (also trades where they use these for dust/particulates) know how to "fit" them to their faces and when the fit is correct.

As for me, I know a bit about this because in order to do anything outside during allergy season, I need to wear some sort of protection. Surgical masks? laugh out loud N95? A bit better, lessens allergy symptoms a bit, better than nothing. Respirator? The best.

BTW several people refer to your typical N95 as a "respirator"..... I think that's somewhat a misnomer for me; this is what I wear when I'm doing lawn work in the spring (note this image doesn't show the filtration elements attached). I also wear goggles over my eyes. I generally only have to do this when I'm stirring up dust like doing leaves or mowing, and only for a month or so.

ALL physical barriers, masks in general, from the basic surgical masks to the p100 respirators to the full on hazmat bunny suit full face respirators ALL do 1 VERY IMPORTANT THING - REDUCES THE NUMBER OF VIRUSES FROM entering your nose and lungs.

The effectiveness may vary, with surgical masks tested on other viruses to block a smaller percentage, BUT ALL MASKS/RESPIRATORS will help reduce YOUR EXPOSURE to the virus.

....

Those who keep saying masks do nothing, only for the sick, ETC, continue to ignore numerous scientific studies that have consistently show a REDUCTION in viruses that get through.

Right now, REDUCTION through distancing, physical barriers, hand sanitizers, wipes, ETC are all good things because the FEWER viruses you're exposed to, the less likely it is for you to get sick.

Yes, scientific studies have even been conducted on the virus blocking ability of clothing fabric, and while under 80%, even a bra on your face does something to REDUCE your exposure to the virus.

They had some grocery experts on TV they said the trouble is keeping items stocked, they don't expect a problem with food supply, and recommend nobody buy more than 7 days worth of food.

Nurse shortage and medical supplies shortage, that's something to worry about.

I'm hearing hydroxychloroquine is at least a year away according to today's press conference. Still very encouraging.

Just a hunch but I bet they will be more than enough human Guinea Pigs available to jump start research. A lot of money will be offered and people are pretty darned stupid these days.
