Stocking up for Corona virus

Hey guys,
Is anyone stocking up on "survival items" in fear of the Corona virus? So far I haven't, but I see a lot of the supermarkets empty from people like that here. Are the fears warranted, should I do the same?

how could masks not help decrease spread? It's a damn physical barrier on your face.
If masks are not effective, why are healthy medical workers wearing them? for style?
who here is making food from scratch?
raw materials are still in abundance here in LA.... beef, pork, fish, chicken
All of LA has been ordered to shut down - can't even go to work!! (Essential jobs, business still open.)
All of CA has been ordered to shelter in place!!!!!!
ARMAGEDDON Has Arrived!!!!
ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! panic 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no bro, grocery shopping is not prohibited during this shut down.
food shopping and restocking shelves are considered essential, and business as usual.
I looked up whether masks prevented the spread of the flu in 1918 and they didn't. Was that due to the fabric or...? It seems like with corona it will be the same and not help with the spread of the virus.
Any mask is better than no mask. Homemade, bandanna, handkerchief, whatever you can do to cover your nose and mouth, which is where the virus will grow and stick to. The test for coronavirus is actually done using swabs up your nose.
A mask will also prevent you from touching your dirty hands on your face especially your eyes/nose/mouth, which is why you should find some hand sanitizer to bring with you when you aren't in the house, like in the car, at the store.

not many people can tolerate endless house arrest.

As to why the masks were not effective in the spread of flu in 1918, it may have been due to lack of user compliance (related compliance issues are discussed in depth in this report [nih.gov]).
It's not clear from the literature whether gas masks were widely used or widely available. While the use of face masks were mandated in some cities during the 1918 outbreak, it wasn't universally required. So, it may be that the only reason that face masks seemed ineffective was because of inconsistent government policies. (Sound familiar to anyone?)
Please note, I'm not advocating that people go out and buy face masks for personal protection.
It's clear that there is a shortage of face masks. Under these circumstances, face masks need to be prioritized for the health professionals, first responders, and the confirmed sick.

Indeed, they would have been better off removing their face masks and putting them on every patient. At least that would have reduced the transmission from the sick, by limiting the amount of airborne droplets expelled during bouts of coughing and sneezing.
In a nutshell, that is how the mandate of face mask use by the general public works, by muzzling the sick - as opposed to protecting the user. (The face mask provides some protection for the user, but the greatest benefit is limiting the source of the contagion.)
Scared to venture to the store tomorrow but things seem to be calming down supply wise as people adjust to this being the new normal. Also, a lot of folks have likely run out of room and money.

This online toilet paper calculator will tell you just how long your supply will last

I'll give you my toilet paper when you pry it from my cold, dead cheeks.
What good Is a mask AFTER you've caught it?!?
Wearing a mask of any type ( mask, respirator, full face, even a bra turned into a mask ) BLOCKS viruses from entering you. (Scientific studies of clothing to n100 show a varying percentage from under 1% of virus penetration to a greater percentage that's not 100%).
Any reduction is better than Ars' absurd "No need to wear a mask if you're not infected" guidelines.
Trump is talking about H.quine Because Pande-merica can't get Avigan!
Today, only Japan and China manufactures it.
Really hard to find now.
Took 5 days of hunting simply to get tp.
Two weeks for wipes.
And that's before the ca statewide lockdown.
Can't find regular bleach yet.
(No, don't buy the splashless, etc - those are clearly Not certified or good for disinfection like regular bleach per label.)

1 million doctors, 3 million nurses. 4 million total.
That's 1 masks plant alone.
Or over 8+ masks per person per month.
...
The rest?
Huh?
Outsourced!
Blame it on Americans who'd rather shop at Made in China Wal-Mart rather than make things proudly in America.

This is one war where China can easily cripple entire countries from Italy to America by simply not shipping supplies. Canada arresting Huawei officials for no good reason except a trade war? Retaliation time!!
China has the capacity and ability to make millions and billions of masks easily with the entire country under Politburo control. Whether we get any depends...

Any PHYSICAL FILTER is not 100% effective.
If a n100 can filter out 99%+, 1% of the viruses still get through.
1918 only had cotton fabrics, so you might expect 20-50% filtering effectiveness as a guess (there's science on filtering effectiveness for clothing fabrics used as masks). Let's say 25%.
Someone coughs. 25% blocked, but you still breathe in 75% of the viruses.
