Westone was the first producer of studio earbuds and has shared the top spot with Shure and Etymotic since before most of us were born.

It's the Holy Grail for music producer. Just because you don't know it doesn't mean its unknown. It's like explaining Apple to people who only know what apple is.

First, the technologies are different. Comparing a speaker to an IEM is the same as butcher knife to a scalpel. If you're a chef and a surgeon, you'd want both in your life.

Second, if you want to compare Westone IEMs with other IEM brands, I'd say Westone's sound signature doesn't cater to heavy base / sub-base. It's all clear and balanced, so you'll hear it just fine in classical or jazz. It's what you'd expect when you buy a smooth luxury seldan versus a Ford Shelby Cobra. Totally depends on what one wants to get out of his driving experience. No value judgment there.

Edit: I own the W60s and it's probably the best thing I've ever bought as an adult. It's pointless without lossless files or a lossless streaming (Tidal, Quboz, etc.), a device connected to a DAC that outputs at high bitrate and frequency (like a dragon fly cobalt or chord mojo). Otherwise, it's like owning a 8k monitor receiving low res output from the computer. Useless.

If anyone reading this is wondering whether those services that cost $30/month offering better than CD quality sound (deeper bit rate) is worth it...I urge you to try those with a pair of high end IEMS. It's life changing. Even if you just want to try it for a week and cancel, it's worth your time. Amazon also offers something like that, but the mastering isn't as good as the less popular companies. People also complain about the UI compared to spotify or apple, for example. Remember that if you're paying for lossless music mastered better than CD bitrate, you're don't care about UI. If you want just normal music listening, you're in a different consumer market. (My wife, for example, doesn't care about instrument separation, sound stage, imaging, and all that jazz.)
