I was able to return my Gram 17 2019 model to Costco before my 90 days and purchased the 2020 model. My primary reason was the improved, wider keyboard with regular number pad. I found the 2019 a bit cramped (backspace in particular I'd miss) and the condensed number pad annoying even though I originally thought I would live with it. The improved processor and integrated graphics are a plus as well. I have been using the new model for a few days now and ran a few tests as well. Here are my comments:

The screen is the biggest selling point to me. I like the larger size, great color/contrast and brightness. The real-estate is great for photo editing. The glare does not bother me and the brightness has been more than plenty. It is a huge improvement over a Lenovo Flex 15 I tried out. I also had a Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED 4K laptop to compare to and the LG Gram 17 was my favorite. The OLED screen had an uneven brightness vertical band on the right side and I was always aware of possible burn in. Side by side, the colors and contrast were not noticeably different even though everyone raves about OLED screens being so superior. I much prefer the larger 17" and 16 x 10 ratio and not having to worry about possible burn in.
The chassis on the 2020 model does seem a little firmer than the 2019. They redesigned the monitor hinge and it seems sturdier.
The touchpad is the same. I really like it. Yes, it does depress a bit as some video reviewers point out, but it's not a big deal to me.
Battery life is excellent and I have not had any issues with drain while the computer sleeps. I often just close the screen in the evening, leaving it on battery only and when I return in the morning, the charge status has no significant change. I haven't written down the numbers, but I recall leaving it around 80% at night and coming back in the morning and it being near that.
I really like how quiet both generations Gram 17s CPU fans are. The Aero 15 was annoyingly loud, even at idle or low usage. The fans had a higher pitch that I could not stand.
Heat has not been an issue for me. It does get warm more so in the center, rear near the monitor since that is where the processor is. I use the laptop on my lap a lot and it is not uncomfortably warm.

Here are several test results I have:

Novabench:

2019

2020

You'll see improvements across the board for the i7-1065G7.

PugetBench v0.8 BETA for Photoshop

2019

2020

You will see that the i7-8565U actually performed some of the tasks better than the i7-1065G7.

In real world use, so far I have not noticed a significant difference in power between the two. I haven't tried games yet, possibly later. I tried some on the 2019 and it didn't work well as expected.

To conclude, I am very impressed with the LG Gram 17. This is my favorite laptop I have used.

i have the 2019 model and develop with visual studio, and it struggles.

However, after discovering throttle stop, l've noticed a significant increase in performance. On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd rate the 2019 LG for development a 4, but after using TS I'd increase that to a 7.

Still not the BEST, but combined with the long battery life, portability, and huge screen (more lines of code on the screen at once) it's a worth trade off.

I can't speak for how well TS would work on the 2020 model, and of course every machine is going to be different, but if I didn't already have the 2019 model i would definitely go for this one.4

EDIT: another plus on the 2020 model, full size numpad, the 2019 model is a bit hobbled. i seriously considered upgrading just for this feature!

bottom line, this laptop checks a LOT of boxes for the price, really hard to beat!

See review comment 13:05 about how 10 chrome tabs will 'defeat' the LG Gram 17 - 2020 due to its low powered 15w i7 processor (vs say the Dell xps 13's 25w)... Any truth to that? I need to run like 30 chrome tabs. Was planning to upgrade the memory to 40GB, would that help the multiple chrome tab performance?

I was concerned about build quality and screen flex due to 17 size but noticed something in store on packaging NOT listed in website for this LG Gram....

This laptop passed 7 Military MIL-STD-810G durability tests.

In addition Costco offers a 3 yr Squaretrade warranty for $100 that covers spills, drops , battery, etc.

Thanks for your response, whelp I guess it's back up contending.

For me all other Windows based laptops that I would consider has somewhat lackluster battery life and all seems to like the 16:9 ratio. So as of now trying to decide between this and macbook 16.

i feel ya, for me having the power is great but if i have to be tethered to a power cord or can't get more than 2 hrs unplugged time I may as well just get a desktop.

if mobility is important to you as a developer, you probably can't do much better than this, other than maybe the surface book, which I'll be taking a good look at this spring with v3 (and will likely be twice as much as the lg!)

I have the previous model, purchased it open box on ebay for around $800, no laptop comes close in terms of screen size, resolution, and weight.

I bought the 2019 Gram 17 from Costco when it was on sale in December. I love the laptop. It's not perfect, but it is so lightweight, has a gorgeous, large screen, and performs well with Adobe Lightroom for photo editing. I have no issues using it on my lap and in fact, I really like that I can take it from my desk and go sit in my recliner comfortably with it. My main gripes are the number pad and thermal throttling on the 2019 model, but they made improvements for this 2020 model. I'm contemplating returning and buying the new one. I'll be just inside the 90 day Costco return window.

Costco guy said the battery alone since non removable is at least $100 to replace and if ST didn't return it within 48 or 72 hours whenever something happens they refund the $100.

Can we play intensive games like FarCry 5 by adding external cooling fan and egpu via thunderbolt?
