I was able to return my Gram 17 2019 model to Costco before my 90 days and purchased the 2020 model. My primary reason was the improved, wider keyboard with regular number pad. I found the 2019 a bit cramped (backspace in particular I'd miss) and the condensed number pad annoying even though I originally thought I would live with it. The improved processor and integrated graphics are a plus as well. I have been using the new model for a few days now and ran a few tests as well. Here are my comments:

The screen is the biggest selling point to me. I like the larger size, great color/contrast and brightness. The real-estate is great for photo editing. The glare does not bother me and the brightness has been more than plenty. It is a huge improvement over a Lenovo Flex 15 I tried out. I also had a Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED 4K laptop to compare to and the LG Gram 17 was my favorite. The OLED screen had an uneven brightness vertical band on the right side and I was always aware of possible burn in. Side by side, the colors and contrast were not noticeably different even though everyone raves about OLED screens being so superior. I much prefer the larger 17" and 16 x 10 ratio and not having to worry about possible burn in.
The chassis on the 2020 model does seem a little firmer than the 2019. They redesigned the monitor hinge and it seems sturdier.
The touchpad is the same. I really like it. Yes, it does depress a bit as some video reviewers point out, but it's not a big deal to me.
Battery life is excellent and I have not had any issues with drain while the computer sleeps. I often just close the screen in the evening, leaving it on battery only and when I return in the morning, the charge status has no significant change. I haven't written down the numbers, but I recall leaving it around 80% at night and coming back in the morning and it being near that.
I really like how quiet both generations Gram 17s CPU fans are. The Aero 15 was annoyingly loud, even at idle or low usage. The fans had a higher pitch that I could not stand.
Heat has not been an issue for me. It does get warm more so in the center, rear near the monitor since that is where the processor is. I use the laptop on my lap a lot and it is not uncomfortably warm.

Here are several test results I have:

Novabench:

2019

2020

You'll see improvements across the board for the i7-1065G7.

PugetBench v0.8 BETA for Photoshop

2019

2020

You will see that the i7-8565U actually performed some of the tasks better than the i7-1065G7.

In real world use, so far I have not noticed a significant difference in power between the two. I haven't tried games yet, possibly later. I tried some on the 2019 and it didn't work well as expected.

To conclude, I am very impressed with the LG Gram 17. This is my favorite laptop I have used.

Just got back from Costco, used this laptop for roughly 4-5 hours today, it's going back tomorrow let me explain why:

1. Laptop gets insanely hot while using it on your lap, this device is meant to be used on a hard flat surface not on your lap, which for many users like myself defeats the purpose. All i was doing was watching Youtube on Chrome, Microsoft Office, and Spotify running. This is a big problem that I never seen get mentioned by any reviewer. Again are you only using this on a desk? Then this heat issue shouldnt be a problem as it wasnt like the fan was running fast/loud it was the actual heat i felt like I was cooking my balls on a grill.

2. Speakers, they really are as bad as the reviewers say they are, maybe worse than reviewed. In addition to being super quiet, at high volumes there is noticeable distortion. Forget about listening to any hip hop, electronic, or watching action movies at high volumes. Also with a 17" laptop you would want to watch media on this thing and i couldnt imagine watching a movie / show with these speakers, i tried its not a pleasant experience.

3. Keyboard backlight - terrible implementation of the keyboard backlight. The light bleeds out from the bottom of the keys so when you stare at the laptop straight ahead all you see are the underside of the keyboards illuminated

4. No media playback keys on a 17 inch laptop? Didnt realize how convenient this is until i didnt have it.

5. Keyboard is horrible. The key travel and flexing that people complained about is not really my issue it's the placement of the keys, the lack of dedicated screen brightness/volume keys, the tiny delete key, just doesnt feel good at all to use

This laptop may be great for many people and at $1200 it's really not that bad of a price considering you are getting a 17" screen that is quality, bright, and higher resolution than 1080p. However for my use cases: actually using laptop on my lap, consuming TV/Movies/Music and other media,

I really wanted to love it honestly because I didnt want to shell out another $1000 for the 16" Macbook Pro (16GB, i7, 256 GB model has been $2000 many times on Slickdeals and you have to factor in the $300 AppleCare as well)

I was willing to give up the superior trackpad of the Macbook, the ability to iMsg/Facetime from a Macbook, and other Apple ecosystem conveniences because of the cheap price of the laptop and the nice huge screen, but if you are using your laptop for many hours a day alot of these compromises i described above are simply deal breakers, again, at least for me.

If anyone has any other questions I'd be happy to answer them.

I tried the 2019 one and I thought it was okay overall. I wasn't as bother by what you have mentioned. But I'm a Mac users and it's a different workflow for sure. I love how you get 17 and you can expand on it. I also really want to get the MacBook Pro 16 but we are looking at about $800-900 more and that's not a small difference....

I was a windows laptop user for the majority of my life (minus the last 6-7 years)

I was willing to give the Gram 17 a chance and almost bit on the $800 2019 model a few months back

But there is no reason why a 13" Macbook Air with 8GB/i7 from 2014 stays cool and quiet yet a brand new Gram in 2020 with 16GB and a much better i7 heats up like an oven

The problem is when you look to grab a Macbook Pro 16" and are dropping over $2k it's hard not to justify spending a bit more on RAM pushing the final price to $2900 with tax + 3 year warranty. Thats $1600 more than the Gram or $1250 more if you opt for 16GB.

Hopefully Apple comes out with a 14" model that will be about $400-500 cheaper than the 16"

I picked up this laptop yesterday and wasn't sure how to feel about it. 17" for a laptop seems a bit excessive for me but I was willing to give it a shot. This morning I left the laptop at 77% battery and closed the lid around 10:00am. I came home after work and opened the lid around 10:15pm and the battery was all the way down to 4%! I'm not sure if I did something wrong but that's a serious red flag for me. I've tried the Dell XPS 13" 2-in-1, Lenovo Yoga C940 14", and HP Spectre x360 13" 2-in-1 and none of them had battery drain anywhere near this drastic. I'll probably be returning this laptop back to Costco soon.

I will add that I removed all apps that I don't use like OneDrive and all LG apps.

I need to check tomorrow if repasting the CPU would void the warranty. Repasting my laptops had always dropped my laptop temps by 5-7C. Plus undervolting should help a lot with Intel 8-10th gens.

On the 16th, ASUS, possibly others, are expected to be releasing laptops with the Ryzen 4000 processors.

None of the rumored models are ultrabooks.

I heard something like that too. My inking is that it's not your issue but something to do with power management or something. Def worth looking into it. Also, try to shut it down and then start it again. It starts so fast that it makes me think that it doesn't even fully shutdown?

I have seen that issue with other Windows 10 laptops. I think sometimes it is not going into hibernate mode.
