I bought this from amazon for $685 a while back, I would not recommend it.
The touchpad is horrible, freezes up every few minutes for a few seconds and is totally unresponsive, then works normally again. This issue was very well documented in reviews and forums. The switchable graphics does not work correctly and usually you end up with the onboard graphics card while gaming not the dedicated one. Battery life is horrible (was expected) and it heats up quickly. The GPU on paper is similar to a 1050, however it lags way behind on performance real world.

I sold it at a $300 loss.

GPU looks somewhat comparable to a 1050 - 1050ti.

The CPU is probably fast enough to transcode 1 or 2 <= 1080p streams. So technically yes.

Why would you get this asus over an HP at walmart that always seems to be on sale for $579 that has marginally better cpu and gpu scores?

If you're in the market for AMD laptops, check out the latest Ars Technica [arstechnica.com] article about the release of the new Ryzen 4000 series - and the efforts on their part to have OEM's better integrate with their laptops (e.g. thermals, battery life, etc...).

Good article and I expect good things will be coming in future AMD-powered laptops...

I have the 17 inch version of this. I put in 16 gig memory and a 500 gig m.2 drive. mine came with a 1 TB hard drive with a empty m.2 slot. I was suprised that I could play Doom on Ultra settings. Never had trouble with the touchpad, but I do use a mouse. Have not had the problems others have complained about yet.
