An anthropologist is visiting a primitive society. Upon arrival, he hears drums beating in the distance. Concerned, he asks one of the tribesmen what's up with the drums. The native says "Drums good. Very bad if drums stop."

The drums continue to beat on hour after hour, day after day. Uneasy at this point, the anthropologist asks again if things are ok. Again, the native replies "Drums good. Very bad if drums stop."

At the end of the visit, when the now unnerved anthropologist is preparing to leave, he asks about the significance of the drums and what's so bad if they stop. The native replies "If drums stop, bass solo starts!"

Seems like a good deal for an entry-level J-style bass. In 4 1 to see how useful this will be for a build platform.

I'd say probably yes, since they apparently do at least a basic setup before shipping the bass out. Strings on this are likely crap. You could likely get a decent used instrument (like a Squier or Ibanez) locally for the same money, and have a chance to play it before buying. But you'd have little to lose with this deal, I think. Bass is a good instrument to start on, for sure. Good luck!

In for one thanks OP. Always wanted to try an Indio instrument (generally hear good things about them) and sure don't need another guitar... So Bass it is! I personally think this is a good deal and pretty safe bet.

I've seen Fender Squier Affinity basses go on Craigslist for around $100 (not sure if they are willing to negotiate down).

With Monoprice, you get a soft gig bag and free shipping (plus you don't have to come in close contact with anyone). Smilie

Grabbed one. I've been looking at Squier jazz basses, but this should fit the bill.

Yeah, the Squier Classic Vibe Jazzes in particular are great values for their price range. But that's still quite a bit more than these. I really do like the 70s with the maple fretboard and block inlays, and will probably get a fiver one of those at some point.
