Modest discount compared to some recent 3900x deals, bet then this chips existence is one of the reasons for those 3900x deals. Until the next generation comes along the 4 extra cores carry a premium and despite not really needing them I don't regret my purchase.
This (and even more so the 3960X) is the chip I am lusting over for my unraid machine with triple gaming VM server. This seems to be about the new norm in price. And given how fast these prices are falling and new releases inevitably pushing them down further soon, I will hold out a bit longer. Still, this thing is a beast

Wondering if a 3900X is overkill over a 3800X for a light video editing rig? I have 32GB DDR4 3600 MHz RAM and 1TB Gen 4 SSD.
if it came with a cooler I'd be tempted to sell my sealed 3900x for a loss and buy it, but not when it needs a cooler bought. It's already too expensive as it is without then having to spend more on a cooler PLUS I'd have to get a new psu, probably as I only have a 550w.
And now I wasted money on a 3600 b die RAM kit despite already having a sealed 3200 b die kit because I just flat couldn't figure out anything to use my gift cards on so will have to hope g.skill is right that the b die kits will retain or even gain value where maybe I can sell the 3200 for enough later to where I didn't end up out much extra. didn't have much choice.
While I can somewhat sympathize that the bang for your buck goes out the window up at this tier, I'd really just be annoyed if it came with a CPU cooler in the box. I'd much rather choose my own and not have to pay for the middling one AMD picks out.
If you absolutely need the 16 cores worth of performance, then I'd just be grateful it's available at this price point which is a bargain compared to what you'd have to pay a year or two ago. And if you don't need 16 cores, well that's another reason to be grateful, lol.

Nobody really "needs" 16 cores. It's more worth it for people who will use it for business and it thus speed up projects, such as rendering videos or something, but for anyone else it's just a nice to have (and even for businesses a nice to have, as businesses can't all get the top line parts).
I was just saying since I had gift cards I flat had to use soon, I was tempted to get that instead of just a faster RAM kit. As far as middling coolers, many have said the amd ones of the past couple years have been plenty good enough. I 100% know it will be good enough for me, as rarely as I would be having the temps high EXCEPT it would be nice to haver the quietest cooler there is, but I have never built and didn't want to have yet one more aprt to figure out.

With the way ryzen boost speed heavily depends on thermal performance, i doubt a box cooler gonna get the best out of the chip you paid a leg and an arm for. And if anything, burn those gift card on a nice power supply if that much horse power is the something you are after ultimately. Good ones last you years and don't really drop in price.

If you're doing "light video editing" Then yeah, even the 3800X is overkill.
If you're doing video editing on a regular schedule and rely on it for income, then as long as your video editing software can utilize the additional processor cores, then it would likely be worth getting the more powerful CPU.

I already have a good psu, only thing is it's 550w, but that's all I need with current parts. just had thought about getting a 750 or 850 for future considerations, but I also don't like upgrading a pc, rather build a new one, so I might as well keep the 550. Also, I am not worried about temps because "most" of the time I will be doing next to nothing, such as going to websites. Was just saying, though, if not for the 2950x being so expensive to switch from 3900x to, I'd still have done it over getting new RAM, though. Also another annoying thing is I spent almost as much for 32gb b die as 64 gb Hynix would be.
