Would like to see a $250 9700k.
No they are not this is a bad Chip the 3600x will run much smoother with a higher 1% lows. And the upgrade path is unmatched, in two years you can buy a 16core CPU for 300$ or so.

single core performance
Yeah I know the single core performance is better on the intel chip but as an all around chip 3600 is hard to beat, and it has better workstation performance.
Second, very, very few applications use more than 6 threads so as to make that requirement a fringe case. On the other hand most workstation applications benefit from a strong single core performance.
Third, very very few users multi-task with multiple applications to benefit from 12 threads.
So, ln paper the 3600x looks good, but it is half a dozen for one and six for the other in comparison to necessarily recommend one over the other (except for the AMD bros). One is likely better than the other depending on the user requirements and what they already have in terms of memory, mother board, etc.
If the 9600x suits the requirements or preference, then this is about the lowest price I have seen for the 9600x and so a good deal.
