5/5/2020: Now...$100 : only after instant redemption rebate ($200) and paying 6 months of service (after 6 mts , u will get $100 virtual prepaid card).
Note:
>>Only color available is black. Stock may vary by store.
>>Store may insist on selling plans >$30, i.e. the $60 plan or a $40 plan, and $6 monthly charge for insurance. They may add on a "free" pet tracker for tax (on $100), open up a phone line for $15 activation plus taxes and $10 monthly charge. Some have reported taking these charges off voids the $100 virtual prepaid card promotion despite the store representative saying otherwise. Speaking to the promotion reps from (800) 999-6389 and they only mention being on the $40 line is sufficient.

Don't know about the rest of you but the $100 rebate does not come back to you automatically. You need to apply at https://promo.metrobyt-mobile.com/. I took me some looking around to find this URL. Metro didn't tell me and the retailer I bought my phone at said to watch out for a text message from Metro that never came.

It's almost certainly like every Metro deal - it depends on the store you go to. There will be stores that won't sell you the phone unless you get the $50 or $60 plan.
There's a corporate store near me that won't let you get one of those "free with port-in and unlimited plan" phones unless you get the $60 plan as well as the $10 premium security bundle. Any "free" phone ends up being $60+$10+activation+tax.
Just like many have said they would not sell the phone at the discounted price unless I bought the $60 plan. They said if I change to the $40 in the first three months I'll be charged the promotional credit I received when buying. I messaged Metro on Facebook but after one day they haven't replied. Holiday and all so we'll give it some time. Any advice on other ways to contact Metro about the legitimacy regarding being forced to keep the $60 plan?

I just did this with an old Metro/Mint burner number that I camped out on Cricket ($15/month plan) and ported back into Metro.

If you haven't down so already, call customer support, switch your plan and get credit for your future bill in the amount equal to what you were overcharged versus what you asked for. They were at least good about giving credit for future use. If the person you first speak with can't do that, a supervisor definitely can.
