How can we be sure we don't get fakes nowadays? I had to order directly from Western digital last time just to feel safe

Run a program called FakeFlashTest as soon as you get the card. It will erase everything on the card but will test the real capacity.

May I ask what people these days use these cards primarily for? I know in the good old days people buy SD cards just for the traditional digital cameras.
