Vizio SB36514 - 9 Channel (5.1.4) Dolby Atmos Soundbar - $499

Vizio SB36514-G6 36" 5.1.4 Channel Home Theater Sound System and Wireless Subwoofer with Dolby Atmos - $499 at Costco

Vizio 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos soundbar system features a 2 front upward firing speakers and 2 rear upward firing speakers to allow for Dolby Atmos. Subwoofer + Rear speakers connect wirelessly to main soundbar unit.

Reviews on this model are overall very strong. There is an older model that is only 5.1.2 (no rear upward firing speakers) that got mediocre reviews in large part due to software issues. This model seems to have solved those problems.

This went for $480 last Prime Day but I've rarely seen it discounted.

A very common use case for these ATMOS speakers is to play offline ATMOS content on these. However, ATMOS passthrough from a PC is not a straightforward process, and is not easily accessible information with a Google search. Thanks to nadus, I've realized that I had set-up these speakers incorrectly and though I had ATMOS for more than one year. But after some back and forth and tons of research, I've figured out the right set. I've consolidated multiple internet sources and provided a couple of steps below to get ATMOS. Please refer to the three steps below if you're struggling with ATMOS sound on these speakers:

Step 0: Hook up your ATMOS source directly to your soundbar (PC/Streaming stick/etc), and hook up soundbar to the ARC port on your TV.
Step 1 & 2: below (sorry didn't want to retype)

https://slickdeals.net/f/14055503-vizio-sb36514-9-channel-5-1-4-dolby-atmos-soundbar-499?p=137722196#post137722196

PS - If you have a newer model TV with eARC, then your TV is capable of doing ATMOS passthrough to your soundbar directly. In that case, your video source can be hooked up directly to the TV. However, if your TV doesn't support eARC, then you HAVE TO connect it to the soundbar directly.

Watchout: If your ATMOS source is a streaming stick like Chromecast Ultra or Fire Stick 4K, then make sure your ARC HDMI port on your TV is HDMI 2.0 and not HDMI 1.4. If it's the latter, then the sticks only display 1080p content and not 4K which means you're limited to 1080p non-ATMOS content on Netflix and Prime. However, you can still force your PC to display 4K at 30Hz on HDMI 1.4.

I actually have my smart sticks (Chromecast Ultra, Firestick 4K) hooked up to TV's HDMI ports directly. I have my soundbar hooked up from my TV's ARC port to the soundbar. THis works perfectly for me.

I have the 1st generation Vizio 5.1.2 system from 2 years ago and that works for me without issues (post firmware updates).

I could be wrong but you're probably not getting atmos as I believe only eARC supports Atmos passthrough, which only a few newer high end TV's have.

Depends on your TV. I have a Samsung and adjusted the Sound Output options in the settings.
Do you know what was that change , I could find something
similar in my Sony TV. Thanks in a adv

Oh is it? I've had this set-up for so long. I'm not an audiophile but it "sounded" like some of the test videos that I was playing had ATMOS like sound. If it's supposed to be set-up how you said it, then are we limited to ATMOS sound from only one smart stick? and I'll have to keep unplugging and replugging this anytime I want to use a different smart stick?

Yes if you don't have AV receivers

Atmos is possible via ARC if it is encoded in Dolby Digital Plus instead of Dolby TrueHD. Your TV would have to support passing through DD+ and the media being played would have to be encoded in DD+. Alternatively, if your TV supports decoding TrueHD to DD+, it would also work over ARC.

True, But that isn't the complete answer.
While you are limited to using the single HDMI in on the sound bar, you can expand its use for multiple devices in need of the full audio processing (e.g. Atmos) with an appropriate HDMI Switch.
This will eliminate the risk of damage to the sound bar HDMI port and also make life easier ;-)
For example, this port switch from Amazon would give up to 5 devices full access to the audio processing within the Sound bar.

Please note, as previously discussed the HDMI out from the sound bar should be utilizing the HDMI ARC port on the TV.

My TV's HDMI2 port supports ARC, but as I was following the rewiring suggestions, I ran into a problem which I never realized until now. I previously had both my smart sticks (Chromecast Ultra and Firestick 4K) connected to HDMI3 and HDMI4. The TV shows me the resolution as 4K when I switch to these inputs, so I know I'm getting 4K. Turns out when I connected Firestick 4K to the soundbar directly, content was only playing at 1080p. Turns out that my HDMI2 port, which is my ARC port, (and my HDMI1 port in fact) were limiting the content to 1080p. So when I opened Netflix on my Firestick 4K that was connected to the Vizio soundbar, I'm only seeing an option was HD content and not Ultra HD 4K content. Not sure where to go from here...I do know these ports actually support 4K as I connected my laptop and and changed display resolution on display 2. Does anybody know why the streaming sticks are defaulting to 1080p on these? Until I figure this out, I I can't connect my streaming sticks to my ATMOS soundbar...

How can I find out if my TV supports passthrough of Dolby Digital Plus? I have a 3 year old budget Hisense (65CU6200), so I'm pretty sure I definitely don't have decoding TrueHD to DD+...

Got it. Any recommendations for a 3 or 4 HDMI port switch at a cheaper price? (Anything in the $20sh range w/o compromising on quality?)

Nevermind! I was wrong. The eARC requirement is only true for TrueHD Atmos but everything your getting through streaming services comes in Dolby Digital Plus flavor of Atmos. If the green light comes on on the soundbar when the content starts playing, you're getting Atmos.

Did you try forcing resolution on Fire Stick to 4K in the settings? By default, I think it is set to Auto. Would changing that to "forced 4k" resolution help? Go to Settings > Display and Sounds > Display > Video Resolution.

I am also interested in this soundbar but issues like this would be a dealbreaker for me. Please let me know if issue still persists.

Turned out that my HDMI1 and HDMI2 (ARC) ports were 1.4 and HDMI3 and HDMI4 were 2.0. As a result, Firestick and Chromecast Ultra are both defaulting to 1080p on the first 2 ports. I can force it to 2160p when I have a laptop connected, but I can't see to force it with Firestick or Chromecast. So this is a TV bottleneck for me and not necessarily a soundbar issue.

I did try an offline ATMOS movie by connecting my laptop to the soundbar, and soundbar into the ARC port. I was playing the content on VLC; the file had 2 audio tracks...media info said Track1 = TrueHD, Track2 = DTS but neither activated the green light on the soundbar (supposed to come when ATMOS content is on)...but again, I'm not sure if the issue is my setup or VLC's ability to parse the content...

I think you have to use the version of VLC from the window store. I read that online somewhere. I've done exactly what you're trying to do which is to play downloaded TrueHD Atmos content through VLC on a laptop connected directly to the soundbar and it worked perfectly, but I was using the Windowsstore version of the application.

Two questions here:
  1. How long ago was your "test run"? I remember reading about early versions of VLC not supporting ATMOS which forced people to resort to Windows' default Movies and TV app. But from what I could research, the current version of VLC seems to support ATMOS, no?
  2. How did you know your had ATMOS going? Did you actually get green light on the soundbar or were you doing a "hearing test"?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT:
I finally figured out to get ATMOS sound transmitting to my soundbar through VLC (settings need to be updated) and Windows Movies & TV App (no settings need to be changed).

For VLC, I had to update two settings: One in Windows Sound Settings in Control Panel & other in VLC.
  • Step 1: Ensure your speaker configuration is set-up to Dolby Atmos. Windows >> Sound >> Sound Control Panel (toward the right side of screen) >> Select your soundbar and click Configure >> Dolby Atmos >> click through settings and Complete.
  • Step 2: VLC (I have 3.0.10) >> Tools >> Preferences >> Audio >> Show Settings = All >> Audio >> Output Modules >> MMDevice >> Output Backend = Automatic (it defaults to Windows Audio Session API Output), HDMI passthrough = Enabled.

Took me forever to research these settings across many difference posts on the internet, but finally figured this out. Not sure why this information isn't easily accessible. This is what you need to follow if you want ATMOS passthrough from PC to this soundbar.

Do you guys think it'd be worth waiting for a deal for a Nakamichi system instead? I think the 7.1.4 system was around the same price range in past sales.

Sorry, I'm confused. This is regular Costco pricing right ? Not sale ?

I would never buy a Vizio product after being told to buy a newer model when my recently bought sound bar dies just around 13 months mark and was told by Vizio agent over the chat (still have transcript) that it is an year old product and just passed 12 month warranty period and they are not supposed to last longer than warranty period. I was surprised to hear the honesty!
