I would go for wifi 6 router like the tp link ax1800/3000 but basically you almost use any other router, just make sure it's a good one.
A friend of mine decided to jump on it and I decided to wait on his experience;
First 2 days was good, great speed, no issues;
Then some wifi connectivity issues, slow down at times;
Friday evening (don't remember if it was 13th) - internet stopped... no access at all.
Called tech support, he has to wait because ATT has only one tech person for a HUGE area...
Sunday - still no internet;
Tuesday, tech guy calls saying that he is scheduled to be there that afternoon;
Wednesday - he arrives and fixes it but the speeds are slow...
My friend realizes he has no admin access to AT router, he needs to call tech support in order to make some changes...
Friday - he calls ATT and cancel fiber;
Sad story, very sorry!
That said, still waiting for it to actually arrive.

There is an additional $10/month rental fee for the modem that you MUST rent. You cannot provide your own modem.
The modem CANNOT be bypassed unless you do some work with a script called eap_proxy. You CAN put the modem into IP-passthrough mode but this is not a true bypass mode because the modem is still managing the routing.
When you use eap_proxy, you put take the modem out of the data pathway and instead it's only used to authenticate against the ONT. Your own router than handles the routing. You still need to pay the $10/month fee to have the modem.
For most people the modem is just fine as a router. For one of my customers that sees heavy heavy internet usage, they were able to slightly up their throughput and halve their latency by taking the AT&T modem out of the equation using eap_proxy and a Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway.
Also one thing to note, if you qualify for AT&T uverse service of any kind, there's a good chance there is also an AT&T uverse reseller in your area.
Why would you want to go through a reseller? In my case, the reseller has the following advantages:
