How bad are the colors on this screen? In comparison to lenovo c740 for example?
Pretty bad and dim. C740 has a 99% sRGB 300 Nits screen and this one has a 60% sRGB 250 nits screen. C740 is better if your use case requires a high quality Screen whereas this one, if you do a lot of CPU intensive tasks like Code compilation, Video Encoding etc. + some occasional gaming---due to its powerful VEGA 6 Graphics, almost equal to a MX150 Graphics card. Also, you can upgrade both the ram slots up to 64GB.

Unfortunately I read some bad comments about cooling solution of this laptop. I mean Renoir is already pretty good when it comes to the thermals, it's already working cooler than 10th gen Intel models under load. And this is a 15 inch metal chasis. Users are reporting high fan noise. So hp must have used pretty bad fans on this.
Well their laptop division is losing money for a long time and they make most of their profit from printers.

Or may be it's firmware issue to handle different Power profiles which can be addressed via a Firmware update. This is one thing where AMD is still lagging behind Intel, due to Intel's vast experiences with the Laptop OEMs.
I have seen this with previous Ryzen models as well and in most cases, they have been addressed via BIOS update.

Yeah it might be. Also how is your IdeaPad doing so far?
$150 discount already! Very good. If you want a better screen you can upgrade it to 400nits from hp store. Upvoted.
I think they might have changed this, as I tried to configure one with a better screen (as I've done before when shopping) and I couldn't configure a 15" with the better screen anymore

Well it's too expensive even if you can anyways. There are much better options right now.

Enjoying it. It is really a great device. BTW, the HDMI port is HDMI 2.0, not 1.4 as mentioned by lenovo. I have connected this to my 28" 4K Acer monitor and a Wireless Keyboard + Mouse...perfect Home Office. The Type- C Port works with all the Type-C Hub I have. It supports 4K 60 Hz with my Type-C Hub with HDMI 2.0.

What's your suggestion for the sub $1k budget? I've been looking at various options and there's no clear winner unless I spend more money.
