Good laptop but non-HD screen is a deal killer It's ridiculous to use non-HD screens at these times.

You can turn that off though.

One of my biggest tech regrets was getting a 768p laptop for schoolwork -- word processing, research, collaborative work, etc. is cramped and lousy (especially on a 15"). Anything less than 1080p is simply not worth it in my opinion.

2020 and still 768p ??? i have 2 lenovo laptop just 2 month out of warranty on both of them the fan died. Lenovo wants 120 $ for the swap for the cooling fan. thats ridiculous.

i will stay away from lenovo from now on.
Why is that rediculous? Out of warranty is out of warranty.

was going to buy a chrome book for my 5th grader. is this overkill or would not be "compatible " in any way?
I'd go for the Chromebook over this. I work for my local school district and I can confidently say that a Chromebook is sufficient for elementary/middle school students. All our kids use web apps (MS and/or GSuite) plus the internet. Plus they are much faster day to day and get updates quickly.

I should add that we distributed thousands of Chromebooks during the Covid shutdown for study at home and everything was good. 👍
YMMV

people can sh!t on this deal all they want but the fact remains that, barring isolated exceptions, you won't find even a used computer with these specs for this price - let alone a brand new one. we're talking about $300 bucks here people. anything else new with an ssd, intel processor, 8GB of ram, bluetooth, and hdmi port is easily in the +$500 category. if you're looking for an A/V laptop, maybe the higher screen res is more valuable to you. if you're looking for a machine to use for work/school-related tasks (word processing, email, internet browsing, spreadsheets, etc.), this is a great deal.
No. 768p is terrible for both AV and work related apps. Spreadsheets on 768p?!?! Are you kidding?! Only if you have a scrolling fetish.

A person who won't be using the screen...or plans to replace the screen...MIGHT want to purchase this.

Even then, a low end Ryzen 4000 will likely be a better choice.

Had me.... until I saw that screen resolution. Yuck. I try not my best not to be a tech snob, but no laptop should have a sub-1080p display in 2020. The rest of the specs are solid, though.

It is HD but not Full HD. It is higher than 720p. The deal breaker is windows S, if you are only using it for internet browsing it's fine. But you cannot download any program from outside of Microsoft store.
You can switch off Windows S but you can't switch on FHD Smilie

Is it still crappy TN panel?

Yes, yes it is
2 wrongs don't make a right. Why get a poor panel and poor resolution ? I never said anything about the TN panel.

I'm not a very computer savvy fella, but our laptop just broke, and I just bought this HP laptop @ micro center today for work: https://www.microcenter.com/produ...er---black

How does the Lenovo compare? Much better? Not better? Just need it for work, not gaming. A quicker load up speed would be great

Both have crappy screens. But the Lenovo is light years faster. Its processor performance is four times that of the HP. You read that right, four times. And it has a solid state drive instead of spinning hard drive, so it will feel dramatically more responsive. And twice the RAM. Between the two it's a no brainer. Windows will load in like a third the time, everything will be so much more responsive on the Lenovo. I wouldn't even pay $100 for that HP.

I don't care how cheap these get. Selling i3 products should be illegal. And whoever buys should go to jail.
