(16GB RAM sticks are $60'ish+ which then would put the out-the-door price of this laptop into a different price strata)
I've been using a Lenovo Ideapad 110 for past 3+ years by doing the same (increasing the standard soldered-in 4GB by adding an 8GB RAM stick for a total of 12GB RAM).
There's a lot of bloatware that comes on these laptops, spend an afternoon to get rid of what you can, toggle the settings to optimize performance, and it's a solid machine that'll give mid-range performance at a very low-end price point.
Battery-longevity is so-so, and this particular 15"+ form-factor is a bit large'ish (not the most portable). But for $299 +tax and $30'ish for RAM add'on later, it's a good purchase IMVHO.
My son uses Chromebooks for school but totally comfortable using the non-chromebook IdeaPad that we got and he's a 4th grader.

How does the Lenovo compare? Much better? Not better? Just need it for work, not gaming. A quicker load up speed would be great
I hate to say it but you got an HP A4 processor. The Lenovo one is with the latest intel core i3 processor for $50 more which is steps above what you got. IMO, I would get this Lenovo one for the processor upgrade alone.
I think equivalent to an i3 is a AMD Ryzen 3 which is 3-4 steps above an A4.
To people that disagree,
The name for resolutions at or near 720p is "High Definition" or HD, just like how "VGA" resolution is 640x480 and 4K is ~3840x2160 and etc etc
"High Definition" won't (at least for the foreseeable future) refer to anything but 720p, regardless of the literal definition of the words and increases in resolution to the devices we use.
These resolutions have standardized names, and you can find them here:
