I've had one of these with the side fire for smoking. Always kept it covered. Worked really well as a smoker, but tough to maintain consistent temps.
Lasted for 15 years, but rusted badly after about 5 years. I continued to use it for the last 10 years until chunks of rust fell off every time I closed the lid.
I added the firebox to mine. Very thin, leaks like a sieve, and rusts out quickly. But not the worst smoker I ever had. I'm looking at you, Brinkman water smoker.
If this is one I a thinking of, tons of reviews about the lack of use of high heat paint especially for the side smoker. Customer service will tell you that the temp was too high. WTF it's a grill, it's supposed to get hot. lol
me gusta, I have one of these and this format is great for slower cooking like salmon on planks or indirect chicken, but can also do pretty well in high heat too. I have a portable air blower to stoke the fire which I find pretty essential for this type of grill, which does give you a good amount of temp control.
It's not going to compete with the big boys like camp chef, and it does rust out in the rain.
