Thanks OP
Personally, I am in no rush and I can wait until Black Friday. I bought my 6-year-old a Fire Tablet for the holidays, and she likes it -- except for the fact that she can't play Minecraft or access YouTube Kids. I am interested in replacing it come December to get another year of Freetime (because the subscription to Freetime is almost as expensive as the tablet on Black Friday).

There are ways to get youtube kids on these. I did it on the fire 7 for my son. Will do it again on this new one when it arrives.

Yes, there is a way to install it and the entire Play Store, but only on the parent side of the tablet. Older versions of the OS and launcher allowed users to share Play Store installs on the kids view, but sometime late last year an update patched it. I found one work around but it wasn't kid friendly. I haven't looked in almost 6 months and to be honest my daughter hasn't complained about missing YouTube Kids any more.
Yes you are right but I added some apps to increase security and only allow him to use certain apps and etc in the parent side. It works for us.
We also read comics and graphic novels on the 10" tablet... again, I feel it is better on a 10", and so does almost everyone else (read on line).
An 8" tablet shines for reading books (not comics or graphic novels), portability (even though a 10" is also still portable) and using it in be. I feel a 8" is more suited to an adult then a kid. I have a Hauwei M5 8" and I switch between the fire 10 and the M5, while my daughter uses the Fire 10 for almost everything except sometimes she uses the 8" to watch youtube.
This is just IMHO.
