Adding a second sub and placing them properly inside the room will yield improved sound quality because the second sub will help with smoothing out the frequency response over a wider listening area.
Sub frequencies are omni-directional. Adding a second sub will not yield wider, smoother dispersion. Properly implemented, you should not be able to pinpoint where the sub is located.
You just need to know your budget, what you want to achieve and how big of a sub (or subs) can you fit in your space. If you are especially handy, they don't even need to look like subs. I've seen people build it into a coffee table, ottoman and end table. You would not know there were subs in the room if you weren't told.
