I'll be honest I'm not sure what to compare this to, but looked up some benchmarks and this seems pretty impressive for the price. I think upgrading the RAM will be a must though. My little cousin is looking into PC gaming so I've been keeping my eye out for gaming laptops around the $500 price range to compete with the upcoming console releases. Thanks
If all you can afford is $500 and you really want to game, this isn't a bad choice. It should handle lighter games pretty well. Just don't expect to play new AAA on High setting on 1080p.

it's a "basic" gaming laptop with an older CPU, but you can buy xbox GCs from dell[dell.com](10% discount with GAME10) and stack wiith amex discounts (if you have them)
and you end up with a deal
Best overall deal I have seen on a gaming laptop in this price range since around BF/Christmas time, hard to beat the specs at this price. Thumbs up and repped!

oh and it is for my nephew going to college
Depends do you want your nephew to play video games all day and fail all of his college classes and then work as the high school janitor? If so then get him a gaming laptop. Otherwise get the Lenovo.

ASUS vs. Lenovo should make the decision for you. ASUS, by the way, if all things are equal.
But maybe neither is a good option. Does he want a touchscreen? I would think schoolwork would require a fast processor and a lot of RAM but probably doesn't need much disk space. Definitely don't need a good graphics card unless he is studying video production or something.
I bought the same specs except it had a 1050 last October for $500, so this will have a better experience fwiw.
My thoughts are the screen is great, it's a thicker laptop and the battery life is just ok, but seeing as it's not using ultraportable parts that makes sense.
Mine had an NVME for the main drive and then an empty 2.5", this should to. I added a 500GB SSD to compliment it and another 8GB of ram.
I actually am using it as my main computer now *however* last week it just randomly started sleeping during gameplay. I'm gonna try reinstalling windows to have a fresh install and see if it stops but may be opening a ticket to Asus.
Overall I am still happy with it even with the weird bug I'm getting, but for $500 you won't find a better specd gaming laptop

Lenovo like to solder their ram, check that out first.
