***** UPDATE from a fellow SD'er seawolf *****

HD is dropping EGO because Lowes is picking them up.

From the Atlanta Business Chronicle today. Sorry, but I am on the app and cannot supply the link yet. Sinc many people have and use these tools this is more of an FYI.

Home Depot is cutting a brand from its inventory as part of a "reset" of its outdoor power equipment.

The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) said Tuesday it's "accelerating its investments" in the reset as it "refines and simplifies its primary brands across the category." That means, in part, discontinuing the Ego line of outdoor power tools, owned by Chervon Group, and have been sold at Home Depot since 2014. Ego products are also sold at Ace Hardware.

Home Depot said it will continue to sell cordless brands Ryobi, Makita, DeWalt, and Milwaukee; and gas-powered products from Toro, Echo, John Deere, Cub Cadet, Honda, and Troy-Bilt.

The Atlanta-based retail giant said the four remaining cordless options fit their aim to provide interchangeable batteries among products, and collectively make up the vast majority of platforms already owned by its customers.

"We are focused on the most relevant brands with the greatest adoption," Sara Gorman, a Home Depot spokesperson, told Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Gorman said it's not unusual for Home Depot to "refine our assortment" of brands but could not specify how often they are removed or when the last time it occurred.

Home Depot earlier this year started to more heavily emphasize its battery-powered equipment and group them by brand. Gorman said the company paused the rollout as stores had more pressing matters with response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ace has tons of stores near me, but prices are not competitive- they only benefit from being on smaller corner locations closer to residences
was going to chime in on the same response.. prices at the ace near my house are outrageous..
From a bag of fertilizer to a rake the prices are 3 times as much... I only go there if a pipe has sprung a leak and my house is flooding.. Thats when I pay the additional 300% markup at Ace.

Lowes will start selling EGO equipment this December.
I suppose they might dump their Greenworks tools then.

Sucks for Ego, but I've got the mower and I'm in the market for a blower and I'm not switching. I'll pick up a refurb kit and maybe a trimmer and run them till they die. Their products are pricy but they actually perform and aside from needing another battery for longer mows, I don't miss my gas tools one bit.

Just speculating here but there's a decent chance that EGO negotiated a better deal from Lowe's and HD announced that they were dropping them to get ahead of the story.

So summary, HD is dropping Ego and Lowes is picking them up:
Quote :
Beginning in December 2020, Lowe's will be the exclusive nationwide home center to offer the top-rated line of EGO's high-quality and innovative battery-powered mowers, blowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, edgers, chainsaws and snowblowers.
EGO products will be available online at Lowes.com and in select stores in fall 2020 and will roll out to all U.S. stores nationwide by February 2021, furthering the company's commitment to offering more sustainable products in its assortment
All in all I'm happy they will still be available in a big box store. Locally I prefer HD over Lowes but it isn't a big deal.

I think you're right.

Now will Lowe's give up on their 80volt Kobolt tool line?

Sounds like damage control from Home Depot since Lowes (a superior company) is going to sell them. The way they put it is actually is borderline defamatory as if the decision has to do with the product itself, and not the fact that it seems Lowes won out on a contract for the tool manufacturer.

.As an aside, would I be reading too much into this statement to conclude that HD is dumping Ridgid?

Highly doubt it, that's their house brand, along with Ryobi. I could be wrong here, but I don't think Ridgid has any OPE options so could be why they're not mentioned. All the others do

Not sure why people are downvoting, was gonna post this too. It's news for people having "EGO" on alert. This means a lot of stuff are going on clearance soon.

At the HD near me and they don't have much stock left.

Thanks for posting. But odd. Lowes already has too many brands.
