***** UPDATE from a fellow SD'er seawolf *****

HD is dropping EGO because Lowes is picking them up.

From the Atlanta Business Chronicle today. Sorry, but I am on the app and cannot supply the link yet. Sinc many people have and use these tools this is more of an FYI.

Home Depot is cutting a brand from its inventory as part of a "reset" of its outdoor power equipment.

The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) said Tuesday it's "accelerating its investments" in the reset as it "refines and simplifies its primary brands across the category." That means, in part, discontinuing the Ego line of outdoor power tools, owned by Chervon Group, and have been sold at Home Depot since 2014. Ego products are also sold at Ace Hardware.

Home Depot said it will continue to sell cordless brands Ryobi, Makita, DeWalt, and Milwaukee; and gas-powered products from Toro, Echo, John Deere, Cub Cadet, Honda, and Troy-Bilt.

The Atlanta-based retail giant said the four remaining cordless options fit their aim to provide interchangeable batteries among products, and collectively make up the vast majority of platforms already owned by its customers.

"We are focused on the most relevant brands with the greatest adoption," Sara Gorman, a Home Depot spokesperson, told Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Gorman said it's not unusual for Home Depot to "refine our assortment" of brands but could not specify how often they are removed or when the last time it occurred.

Home Depot earlier this year started to more heavily emphasize its battery-powered equipment and group them by brand. Gorman said the company paused the rollout as stores had more pressing matters with response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It's sad to see a good brand go, but HDs reasoning actually makes sense. They are consolidating the battery based brands they are offering to the four main brands that span multiple product categories like OPE and power tools. Most people will want to buy into a battery platform for all their tools so they can interchange them easily and maximize their investment. I for one looked at EGO and loved what they offered, but stuck with Milwaukee because I was already invested in the M18 platform. Same will be true for people with Ryobi, Makita and Dewalt tools. Sounds to me like EGO had no plans to expand their product offerings into other categories like power tools, which is probably what HD was looking for.

Love these tools. Only cordless hedge trimmer I've tried that could compete with gas. Made short work of a 200' ficus hedge in Florida that would choke normal plug in trimmers. That sucker would grow 5'-7' every summer but the EGO just tore through it in a couple of hours with only a quick 30 minute battery top-up halfway. Probably overkill for little shrubs up North but awesome for fighting back aggressive tropical growth.

wow...so expensive for cordless. Great for the rich. Elite tools.

Home depot is major account. Looks like not enough sales worth carrying it.

Expect major financial impact to company since Joes lawn shop is not enough store line exposure.
Lowes is going to carry them.

Great news about Lowe's picking them up. I've been migrating my business towards Lowe's from HD anyways. Plus, Lowe's is closer to me than HD. I've been an EGO user for 5 years, and have never had an issue with any of their products.

Lowes will start selling EGO equipment this December.

Sad,,, Lowe's seems a bit higher priced and doesn't run as good as specials.
I have many ryobi 18v tools but when i wanted more powerful equipment I skipped the ryobi 40v systems because they appeared cheaply made and 40v is to low, in my opinion.
I skipped and planned on going EGO for all higher volatage needs.
At some point I wish EGO could go ALL online and cut out lowes and home depot and deliver us a good product at a better price.
My other wish is that like in IT, which i work, the industry would have published standards on batteries to help reduce wast, risk and to benefit the consumer. We cannot and should not continue to have all of these propriety battery types that only lock consumers into systems. it doesn't mean all batteries need to be equal, but at least batteries would be interchangeable.

I am torn on this news. I have greenworks yard tools, and if Lowes is picking up Ego (in addition to craftsman and Kobalt and whatever other high voltage elec yard tools they already sell) they will probably drop something, maybe Greenworks. I do want the snowblower, and would gladly pick one up on closeout clearance, but what happens in a few years when my batteries start to fade, is the whole set just e-waste? Do I whip out a dremel and start modifying other brands' batteries? Do I open em up and start re-soldering cells?

This now make sense as I was wondering why the 3rd gen mower was clearanced at HD. I'm relief that Lowe's picked them up.

On another note is it just me or did Ego's customer service dipped? I remembered last year it took them an abnormal time to response to emails and when I did called, the hold time were long as well.

Also crazy thing is their products increased in price. I remember the battery link was around $150 and now is $180, of course when I need it!

Anyone have any idea who will be servicing their repairs then until December? It used to be that you'd take your defective product into home depot... is there going to be an interim period where you can't repair your product then?

I think Ego missed the mark on pricing. Myself along with most others on here wait until the equipment is heavily discounted before purchasing. They should have spent the last 6 years driving down costs and putting their equipment into a competitive price range with gas options. That being said I have owned the very first lawn mower they built and just upgraded early last year to a newer version. Their equipment works well and their brand image is still strong so I would hope they can refine their pricing and it would benefit us all....especially their batteries.

I think battery being high profit margin is their business model. In any case HD price protection plan for lawn mowers reimburses 50% on extra batteries.

I wonder if Lowe's will sell refurbished Ego equipment like Home Depot?

Just had a battery replaced in April. Took over 24 hrs to get a call back from customer service - obvious rep was working from home due to Covid. Once I did hear back, call took less than 10 minutes and I had a new battery 10 days later.
