***** UPDATE from a fellow SD'er seawolf *****

HD is dropping EGO because Lowes is picking them up.

From the Atlanta Business Chronicle today. Sorry, but I am on the app and cannot supply the link yet. Sinc many people have and use these tools this is more of an FYI.

Home Depot is cutting a brand from its inventory as part of a "reset" of its outdoor power equipment.

The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) said Tuesday it's "accelerating its investments" in the reset as it "refines and simplifies its primary brands across the category." That means, in part, discontinuing the Ego line of outdoor power tools, owned by Chervon Group, and have been sold at Home Depot since 2014. Ego products are also sold at Ace Hardware.

Home Depot said it will continue to sell cordless brands Ryobi, Makita, DeWalt, and Milwaukee; and gas-powered products from Toro, Echo, John Deere, Cub Cadet, Honda, and Troy-Bilt.

The Atlanta-based retail giant said the four remaining cordless options fit their aim to provide interchangeable batteries among products, and collectively make up the vast majority of platforms already owned by its customers.

"We are focused on the most relevant brands with the greatest adoption," Sara Gorman, a Home Depot spokesperson, told Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Gorman said it's not unusual for Home Depot to "refine our assortment" of brands but could not specify how often they are removed or when the last time it occurred.

Home Depot earlier this year started to more heavily emphasize its battery-powered equipment and group them by brand. Gorman said the company paused the rollout as stores had more pressing matters with response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

I think Ego missed the mark on pricing. Myself along with most others on here wait until the equipment is heavily discounted before purchasing. They should have spent the last 6 years driving down costs and putting their equipment into a competitive price range with gas options. That being said I have owned the very first lawn mower they built and just upgraded early last year to a newer version. Their equipment works well and their brand image is still strong so I would hope they can refine their pricing and it would benefit us all....especially their batteries.

very well said.

Even if you love the EGO system and want to see HD fire-sale them out so you get a deal, this isn't good news long-term. The only way I could even afford the EGO system to begin with was because of the deals that HD offered. They have deals all the time, and their clearance deals at the end of the season were pretty good too. I guess ACME and Amazon will have some now, but you'll never find the kind of deals you found at HD, especially B&M.

The killer deals for me though have been purchasing their refurbished EGO equipment. I was able to get a lot of cheaper EGO stuff that way, especially stuff I do not use frequently like the chain saw and snow blower. That was a good way to get cheaper batteries too. Where exactly are you going to be able to order refurbished EGO stuff now? As far as I know, Home Depot was the exclusive supplier of them.

Truthfully, I see this as really concerning for the EGO line as a whole. Perhaps it is just a small part of the HD's cordless portfolio, but I have to bet it was a large part (easily the majority) of EGO's business. I'm concerned how the brand will rebound from this, and I'm concerned how I will be able to afford the line going forward.

Just a quick take, but it seems more like Lowe's was willing to take less margin than HD on Ego sales. I'm not sure of Lowe's refurbished unit strategy in general, but yeah, users could take a hit there.

Ryobi and I forget which other brand had bought out their shelf space. Simple as that.

What will this do to Home Depots 180 day return policy (for Corona Virus) with regard to Ego tools? I can envision a FLOOD of returns for Ego products purchased in the last few months. Returns to take advantage of clearance sales by Home Depot or for Veterans and us cheapskates Umm I mean Slickdealers who will return Ego purchases to take advantage of the discounted Lowes Gift cards...I am wondering what hoops are required for a return of an Ego tool to Home Depot? Anyone?

So if you need a new battery, you have to go through Ego or Amazon? I might need to consider returning my Ego trimmer and blower I got at HD a month ago.

In other words, they're expensive and don't sell well, so they're not going to bother anymore. Makes sense.
Hmm, I researched for a week back in 2017 before buying their weed whacker and everything, at least at the time, made them the best company and product on the market. Been very happy with the trimmer, edger, and backpack blower.

Glad Lowe's is picking them up, after the failed Craftsman endeavor last year, but also looking forward to getting more Ego stuff for good prices at HD soon!

Ego multi head, trimmer, blower, mower, edger, and hedge trimmer. All great tools. Home Depot discounts probably cut 40% off the retail on the lot. Will miss those deals.

According to that announcement there will also be more SKIL products at Lowe's. SKIL is now one of Chervon's brands, alongside EGO. [chervongroup.com] Sounds like this could be part of a bigger deal negotiation.
Makes me wonder if HD did really drop them or they were poached by Lowe's.

I just started my Ego collection and I am glad a local and big box retailer is picking them up.

At the time of my post, it wasn't announced that Lowe's was carrying them yet (or at least I didn't know about it). I still prefer HD over Lowe's in general.

This now make sense as I was wondering why the 3rd gen mower was clearanced at HD. I'm relief that Lowe's picked them up.

On another note is it just me or did Ego's customer service dipped? I remembered last year it took them an abnormal time to response to emails and when I did called, the hold time were long as well.

Also crazy thing is their products increased in price. I remember the battery link was around $150 and now is $180, of course when I need it!

Called them for a missing part on a factory certified equipment I bought. They picked up almost right away.. not sure about your experience but mine was fantastic. Only sad part was a one week shipping time to get my part - I've been spoiled with Prime shipping. 🤦🏻

Just hoping I'm online at the right time whenever the discounts start. Still mad that the one day I don't get on Slickdeals until the evening they had the sale on the reconditioned 530 Blower w/ battery and charger for $99. Still want that blower, the chainsaw pole attachment and maybe even the chainsaw if I can get them at a discounted price
