I'm not that familiar with weather stations, so I'm not sure how good of a deal this is.

La Crosse has their wind + weather station on sale for $49. Comes with Breeze Pro Sensor (wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and humidity sensor) and display. Seems like the display was supposed to have WiFi but they goofed at manufacturing. The Breeze Pro Sensor (LTV-WSDTH01) is normally $69.95 MSRP.

Weather Station Display (79400) + Breeze Pro Sensor (LTV-WSDTH01) for $49: https://www.lacrossetechnology.co...1865688110

Just the display (79400-11) is on sale for $25: https://www.lacrossetechnology.co...s/79400-11 OOS

Cheapest shipping was $2.00 for me (FedEx - Smart Post).

Also on eBay ($49.95) with free shipping: https://www.ebay.com/itm/79400-La...4220049255

Edit: seems like it uses 915 MHz, so in theory you can buy it and a $20 RTL-SDR to get the data on your computer/Raspberry Pi/whatever. So for about $70 (the same price as the sensor itself), you get the sensor, the display, and a RTL-SDR dongle.

Would the RTL-SDR allow this unit to connect to Wunderground? A rainfall sensor would be needed as well but $100 total is cheaper than $160 for a unit with wifi

Can someone explain this in more detail? So does the station have WiFi or not? How does one make use of this "faulty" WiFi chip?

"The 79400 provides accurate backyard wind speed & direction, temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure data. Its display can also accept multiple add-on rain, water leak, and temp/humidity sensors to monitor other areas of your home. This unique opportunity is the result of a software error in the unit's WiFi chip. And though this part has been disabled, it remains a fully functional standalone option for monitoring your home and backyard conditions. This is a one-time chance to own a personal weather station at a fraction of the normal cost. So act fast! When they're gone, they're gone!"

Typically how these weather stations work is the outdoor array will send information to the console via radio frequency (not wifi). The Console then relays that information to the internet via Wifi, which is broken in this case. So your data will only be viewable on the console. I doubt there is any way to make this thing work again as the firmware is likely proprietary.

I have a similiar one bought for 70 dollars at costco. It has rain sensor. The wifi is used to connect to nws for local wind direction, cloud cover, forecast etc. Not critical to operation. It sets up via a very confusing app. Once set up it works well.

So the sensors and the display work fine, you just won't be able to look at the data on your phone or whatever? Interesting.

What La Crosse is trying to say is the unit is perfectly fine other than the WIFI which does not work at all due to some manufacturing/firmware/etc. problem. The units are cheap BECAUSE of the WIFI defect. You can only get the info to the station screen. The individual components can still send info to the station via standard radio communications. The station cannot relay this info via WIFI to any other device phone app, internet, etc. If I understand this correctly, what others are talking about is hacking the device to utilize the working radio signal between the station and the outdoor device to allow communications to other devices. Not a task for beginners.

The specs states:
Included LTV-WSDTH01 Wireless Outdoor Temp, Humidity and Wind Sensor

So it includes the sensor and the indoor display

What are the point of these?
Weather sensors tend to only cover portions of a zip code and not all or even most of it. With these systems, assuming you can connect with something like weather underground, you can help with weather monitoring and prediction. Someone correct me but IMO this is more for data geeks

Was waiting on one of these for my dad with a rainfall sensor but $54 bucks vs $100+ I've been seeing... I'll bite.

My dad is a runner and likes to have localized data to record in his run log.

Otherwise just for people that like to have the information i guess?
