It's an artificial leather, and the outermost "shiny" layer separates from the layer underneath over time. It's the sort of look you get on a faux leather couch, and wherever people's bodies touch it, you see the matte/fiber material underneath. You get little flecks of the outermost shiny layer coming off as it gets worn.

Some are better than others, re: that separation. It's 80% an aesthetic thing, but I also recommend against it if there's an option. It's the sort of thing where you might feel icky sitting in someone else's chair with that kind of wear. Even more so than a couch, you may spend a LOT of time in one of these chairs all in the same spot, so the wear happens somewhat quickly.

Artificial leather wears fast. It'll start peeling in a short amount of time and look awful. Not to mention, not very breathable, so you'll get sweaty.

Once you get a small tear in it the whole thing will start falling apart and you'll be tracking little pieces of bonded leather all over your house.

Depends on the quality of the bonded leather. Not all bonded leathers are the same. Our shoes also made from bonded leather, that kind of bonded leather will last longer.

If I am not mistaken it is chopped up leather bits that are bonded under high pressure with kind of binding agent that is adhered to a cloth-type backing. After about a year or so (depending on the quality) the "leather" starts to separate from the cloth and leaves flakes of the bonded leather on your floor. Feels like leather for a while though.
