Anyone know the difference in the "Smoke Hollow" vs the standard Masterbuilt?

The John McLemore version from Lowe's for $12x with the chip feed pan seems like a better deal - never have to open the door to add chips. It gets varying reviews on reliability of the electronics (all these models are very similar). Personally, I wish mine had wheels as I keep it indoors when not in use, but it's made some fantastic Boston butt for pulled pork this summer.

Yes, with this smoker you will need to open the door to reach the wood chip tray. There is no an outside wood chip loader.

Well that sucks, letting all the heat and smoke escape.

Yes....that is a huge negative that anyone considering it should be aware of.

Also means you cannot modify this to have an outside smoke box.

I did a 7# butt yesterday (Charbroil electric) and reloaded the wood once as I was pulling some chicken out.

Overall cook time was about the same as when I don't change the wood. I wouldn't consider it a dealbreaker on a unit like this. If you're semi-quick, it's like opening the oven door -- the heat will build back up pretty fast. And the smoke is constantly pouring out of a full box, so you're really not losing much there, either.

I bought a different masterbuilt electric smoker and returned it because the paint started peeling off after the second use. I'd only buy one of these if the inside was unfinished (ss) or if you are willing to sand off the paint. I just use a smoke tube with pellets on my propane grill and turn only one burner on low and use a wireless thermometer to keep the temp between 225-275. Works great.

I had the one with side loader for several years. Still works but getting chips to smoke under 220f has been challenging. Recently added pellet smoke tube for low temp smokes and it's a much better experience. But honestly you can put the smoke tube in the grill (if you already have one) and smoke that way so not sure if I will replace the smoker if it ever breaks.

I had to move the smoker box closer to the heating element in order to get smoke consistently at any temperature. Someone on a MB board even swore by putting the smoker box in direct contact with the element but I think it would eventually short it out. It's sad that people have little choice in economy smokers anymore because MB is not built to last in my opinion.
