If you're just using a gopro or a phone you can get cheaper knockoffs of these.
These are geared more for a heavier camera but not to say this isn't perfect for everything.

Also remember, most people do not need the 5k. A 3k is way enough pulling 3kg weight by 5 kg for mega lenses.
First, your old GorillaPod is plastic whereas these are metal construction. Second, the articulation is stiffer and the construction is more durable than older models. Third, if you are comfortable putting a $9 support under your camera than you're absolutely right, this tripod is not meant for you.
