Staples will take up to 5lbs of paper for shredding. They will weight the paper before it is placed in the shredding bin. Make sure you print the coupon and bring it with you.

Will they shred it right in front of you? Or do you have to leave your papers there?
The Staples near me uses Iron Mountain shredding service which is picked up and shredded off-site. They weigh your items to be shredded, and then you slip them into the slot of a locked hard-sided garbage bin.

Can't speak to Staples business practices, but they do run this promotion regularly. I rarely buy from Staples, but I do use the shredding service when they offer a coupon like this.

Most times on your receipt there is another coupon for shredding.

Why trust these fools. Just buy a cheap shredder for home and use it. At least you have peace of mind that your data is safe
Why are they fools, Moron? Nothing wrong with Staple employees or stores. The shredders are secure and so is the process for picking it up. Please don't wear a mask in public.

I once saw an Iron Mountain bin in the lobby of my office building. It was standing unlocked, full of papers, with the lid open in the middle of the lobby. I do all my shredding myself now
Quote from Lancasterpa :
So what? Were people stealing information from the bin in your office building? Too much is made of this stupidity. This keeps the information out of the hands of criminals. I have used this service for MANY years. Most of the time it is free with a coupon. In my area, PA they use Shredit.
I think that you might have missed the point. You shred your documents so that people who DO go through your garbage don't find intact sensitive information. Well, in this person's case, said sensitive info was in a 'garbage' unprotected and intact. The risk may be low, but it IS there. He is just being extra careful. The chances that his info ending up in the wrong hands is low, but HawaiiGirl knows that the chances of a data leak are lower if she does it herself. If some of these data criminals work in her office, they may hit the jackpot if they're able to get their hands on some of those papers.
But, for the most part, I agree that this is safe enough for most of us.

That Consulate at Houston were using this method, and the Fire Dept showed up.
They got raided shortly after, so not a good idea.
Should have been a heavy rain day to prevent them hiding their illegal activities.

Around here they take away the locked bins, roll them down to the truck. And the truck has the shredder onboard. Which makes sense because major liability driving 10 tons of of conferential paper and then wrecking.

I found that Shredit held a "Can Goods Drop Off" and they would take a whole box of things to be shredded for a donation to our foodbank, Maybe they have one locally to you. I know it is self-serving but you can suggest the idea to your local food bank or church that feeds the unfortunate.

Are the UPS prices at Staples the same as if you go directly to a UPS store? Or do you pay more at Staples, which would make the coupon less valuable.
This is a YMMV. Many of The UPS Store locations are locally owned franchises. When you ship through them, you are shipping on that UPS store's shipping account (yes there are exceptions, not relevant rn).
The stores get a shippers discount through UPS and can set their accessorial margins higher or lower from suggested levels. That said, most UPS Store employees just through repetition are going to know a lot more about how to get a shipment somewhere correctly (and have more packaging knowledge and better materials) than a Staples employee.
Copies at Staples, Shipping at UPS. When in doubt, check local store reviews.

I would just make multiple trips to different Staple locations in the area. The coupon doesn't expire until the end of the month.

No, not quite. You only needed to donate one can of food, but most brought a bag of canned goods. I gave a few cans, IN DATE, that I knew we would not use like gravy and cranberry sauce, beans, and yams. Ready for Thanksgiving. You could then give them a full box (any size) and they shredded it right there in front of you. I think they had 2 trucks at the time. They also took CD's and DVD's. It was so popular that there was a line of at least 15 - 20 cars when I showed up. It was a drive-through but you could park after and watch your stuff get shredded if there was a back up.

I went to use the service yesterday and was told the coupon was not needed. The first 5 pounds is always free. I never heard that before. I kept the coupon for today. I have about 30 pounds to shread and that would take forever with my shreader. Just a note, take everything out of the envelopes and you can almost double the amount of security papers processed.
