I bought them last year as well and have the same problem with mine. I wish there was a way to tighten it as I like the feel and it's a good heavy duty tape. For the reason of its retraction issues, I would not buy them again so I am recommending a pass on this these.

Bought two boxes of these last year and for the price, they are great. The problem from the batch I bought, is the so called lever lock does not hold the tape, but rather it only slows it down in retraction. But for backup tapes, they are fine.

Held the tape for a bit then stopped. Fine if you have two hands but otherwise I'd pass on this system.

You absolutely get what you pay for here. Good for maybe a year before it won't hold.

You get what you pay for. I by tape measures that can reach out 15-20 feet before flopping. You'll be lucky to get 5 feet.

If you regularly measure over four feet, spend a few bucks more and get the Fat Max by Stanley. Better overall quality and the tape is wider so it reaches farther without buckling.

The original Made in USA Stanley tape measures (prior to Stanley B&D and everything being made in China) included the original LeverLock design, and it was excellent. The same goes for Sears Craftsman Made in USA tape measures (in yellow with a gray lever lock design on bottom) were also excellent. I really do not like the standard design with the button you need to push down into the tape to secure it... this design is much superior to that design IMO. Also, the Komelon "button" design works great as well. At $4 for a 25 footer with LeverLock, this is a really good deal.

Agreed with the other posters about cheap metal. I couldn't measure from the floor to the ceiling without it wobbling around uncontrollably. Even if measuring along the floor, it won't stay straight.

Not recommend due to the so-called level lock which doesn't work well.
