Alternatively, you can consider Sony soundbars such as the ht-x8500 for $300 which sound great and have Atmos support also (rated pretty similarly to the Sonos Beam and a little better than this playbar according to rtings)

I was tempted to buy this as well but you are right about it being long in the tooth. It's an old design and I would hate to get it then Sonos kill it in a year or two.

This was discontinued early this year, I think, or maybe late last year. Either way, you've got around 4.5 years of official support guaranteed. After that, it will still work, it just won't get updates when they stop supporting it, new features, or be guaranteed to work with new Sonos equipment.
Frankly, I'd still spend the money on a newer product, with more features, that will last 10 years or more, but this ain't a bad deal if you know what you're in for.
P.S. As someone who has Sonos gear in every room of his house (including bathrooms), Sonos home theater equipment sounds great and is a lot simpler to use than a traditional AV system, but there are better sounding alternatives for the money. It really only makes sense if you're A. already invested in (or plan to invest in) the Sonos whole-home audio ecosystem, which is phenomenal IMHO, or B. you value simplicity, minimalism, and/or ease of use over absolute sound quality and cost.
How are you liking the Arc? I have a PLAYBASE, SUB, and 2 Play:1's for my home theater (plus a Beam, six Play:1's, a Connect, and a ZP100 throughout the house).
I just bought an ARC for my master bedroom approximately 25x18 rectangle room with 8 foot ceiling and it is amazing the Atmos and surround effects are outstanding for just coming from the bar itself really is able to make sound 3 dimensional the trueplay tuning for your room really does make a difference I plan to add a Gen 3 sub and two Play 1's in that order in the near future. I read a ton of reviews on multiple different systems before deciding on the ARC and have zero regrets.
